OK I've got it booting with a FRESH install of windows, can I copy the drivers over from the weedy old HDD?
With any luck windows will have all or most of the required drivers already.
Had good luck with many brands myself, with the exception of Sony which always seemed to need some specific drivers.

You can check the hardware manager on the small drive to see which drivers are installed.
You do need to install the drivers though, not just a copy deal.
The required install files may be on the drive though, if you are lucky.

If you check there are drivers available online for download.
Best to get them from a reputable site or manufacturers site if you can though.

On the fresh install check the hardware manager for exclamation marks that indicate drivers required.
I prefer to only install what is absolutely necessary or is required.
Start with the chipset driver, then video driver, sound driver etc.

Just checked the acer website, looks like everything you need is there

Did you go to the "Cool Tools" tab and click on "Make Target Volume Self Bootable"?
You can do this after you clone it.

All very good but one of the drivers I need is the driver for the wireless connection. I can't download anything.

Download the wireless driver on another pc, and then transfer to laptop with a usb stick or cdr/cdrw.
You can also connect to the network with a wire and download directly to the laptop.
Make sure you have the laptop at least up to SP3 before you connect to the internet though, otherwise it could get comprimised very quickly.
Same deal with SP3, download what you need and burn to a cd or usb stick and transfer.
Once you are connected, install the rest of the Windows updates asap as well.

I'm just trying XXClone again with the Cool Tips selected to make the second drive bootable. Let's see if that works.
Reinstalling XP isn't the ideal solution as the licences then don't match. I've used the install discs so many times that Microsoft are getting suspicious. Even though it is my copy and on my PC.

Finally success - a cloned HDD with the original XP install all working fine.

HD clone has a free edition that works. I prefer True image. There is a free version for a system having at least one WD hard drive and another version that looks for a Seagate HD. But as long as it finds that drive you can clone any other drives you have hooked up. Like with the WD version you can still clone a Seagate to a Maxtor drive as long as a WD drive is in the system.

With Ghost and other software, besides cloning you also have an option to create a backup image of your drive.
At work, we would bring in 20 - 100 pcs at a time, load one for each different type of user, csr, ts, dl, developer etc and then create images for each. Once that is done you could then use the image to replicate as many pcs as you needed, much quicker than loading each one.
For your use, you could create a backup image and copy it to another drive or burn to a dvd.
That way if you system ever gets trashed, you can bring it back to the image creation point.
Usually the best time to create that image is right after a clean reload.
