What full range driver for 1-1.3L sealed enclosure

Hi everyone !

I'm working on a project with very strict conditions. I am looking for a 4'' (or less) full range driver that would work in a sealed enclosure with a volume of 1 to 1.3L.

To make things a bit harder I would love decent bass (for this size). I know it will never be able to hit too low, but as much as possible.

I've tried a few combinations already, but nothing really satisfied me...

I'm open to all suggestions, even with passive radiators or a two way configuration if there is no other option.

Thanks for your help 😀

That's really small to get any bass. Is the 1-1.3 liter limit firm? I built a pair of Passive-Aggressives that I highly recommend, but they are a little more than 2 liters.

I've seen those ! Nice build btw !
Unfortunatly, this limit is pretty firm... I'm retro fitting in my old grand parents radio and I need a bit of space to fit the class D amp and the repurposed original potentiometers.
One way I could work around this limitation could be to go mono, and thus multiplying my volume available by 2.

Depends what your definition of bass is.

With a 4" driver or less, in a 1L enclosure, I doubt you will get better than 120Hz. Probably higher if you decide to play a little loud.

If that satisfies you, then great. If you were expecting 50Hz, then nope. Not going to happen.

The ND-105 seems to be the best bet for the bottom end, but you will need a tweeter. Le is quite high and you can't get more than about 5kHz out of it, ideally a 3k crossover. If the top end isn't important it might be enough with some massaging.

You might need the acoustic loading technique to get the bass where you want it. There's a pdf on the SB Acoustics website. The correction is somewhat approximate, but it works. I use it to extend a B3S in a very small box, and it worked fine.

The MA Alpair 5.2 is about 1.32L for 0.71 Q sealed. The 5.3 is probably similar. The F10 is about 80Hz.

I haven’t looked at pushing the limits of really small boxes for these. I have done 2 litre, but i suspect it could be pushed down.

The A5.2/5.3/CHN50 use pretty much the same boxes.

The F10 (the midrange one used by many) fits into a 0.8 litre nScan-Ken.

Do note that at these sizes material thickness becomes a considerable contributor to gross volume. If you can somehow construct of verty thin material (like 4mm Al) the box material becomes a significantly smaller portion of th evolume.

I've done a 1.3 litre SB65WBAC25-4 as vented and also PR using a modded SB12PAC PR. Both had an Fb around 80Hz and usable bass to below 70Hz. Not much power handling though but works well with a Dayton DTA-2 with a few watts but easily bottoms out with a LM1875 amp.

Just as an aside, I just figured out they changed this driver..

old (current?)

new

These changes on tymphany's website happened within the last three weeks. Xmax doubled, Vas went down, Qts and Fs up.
