what ever happened to good scratchbuilding

DIY isn't dead, but IMO the percentages of the general population that can fabricate anything are way down. Thank goodness for the 'net since I don't know anybody that's into the things I am, and I know a lot of people! IMO young people are at a serious disadvantage. The sorts of things I used to take apart and work on as a kid don't exist anymore except in digital form. Not much fun to take apart a digital alarm clock. Goodness knows if a kid today did the things I did with chemistry and explosives they'd be locked up for life. Those of us who survived got a really good education! I don't know what most people want from life and from hobbies these days, but I suspect it isn't recognizable to me. I have little artistic talent, but there don't seem to be that many people drawing, painting or sculpting either. It's not a hands-on world anymore.

my point of view exactly, all you see now are a bunch of black things instead of good old solid state, don't get me wrong i like portability but it takes away the basics. i missed the good old days of using masking tape and an x acto knife to lay out the pcb paths, not professional but still i take good pleasure in knowing i did that. diy and scratch building may not be dead yet but hopefully with good sites like diy audio, the newer generations would see how fun it is to build your own.

I've heard complaints from parents and teachers in recent decades about the demise of art and music classes in schools, but never about shop class. Where there's funds, there's art and music, but there's no more shop class in ANY high school I've heard of, as it's perceived as being "not safe" both for the physical safety of the students, and the legal liability for the schools. Regrettably, the solution is proper safety instruction, NOT getting rid of activities deemed "not safe." Now that I think about it there should be "proper safety instruction" for (American) footbal.

Yet they get drivers licenses and drive cars at age 16...

That's enough of a rant, before this starts sounding political. :redhot:

it may be a rant, it may be political, everybody has differeent point of views, but the sad reality we are going downhill, we now live in a world consisting of a couch a television, a game console and the net. privacy no longer exist. we cant even sneez without anybody tweeting or facebooking it, bahhhhh now i'm ranting i apologize.
it is really sad where we are now, i just hope my grandkids and their grandkids would appreciate what they built themselves like how i enjoyed my projects...
