What do you think makes NOS sound different?

For the record, I'm fine with Bill drawing different conclusions than I did, in fact I called my own conclusion "somewhat speculative", but his summary in post #1521 is inaccurate as the first test did result in one significant result.

I am not a golden ear, but I have a very revealing reproduction system. Unfortunately my best dac is down at the moment for upgrades, and I'm busy working on other projects currently at a higher priority. Otherwise, I would be happy to listen.

That said, I haven't noticed much difference in sound when I upsample from 44kHz to 192 kHz in hardware. The dac sounds only slightly better with CD upsampled 192kHz.The big improvement with some dacs is from conversion from PCM to DSD256 (or higher). Of course it matters how well the conversion is done.

I am not a golden ear,
 That's quite contrary to what you've been posting.
"I know I can hear smaller changes than .5dB."
"I am very sensitive to distortion"

Better / improvement in sound reproduction system is the level of audible transparency. Without the reference material to compare side by side, it's not a meaningful evaluation. Just an impression, which is fine for your own consumption but it unfortunately serves no function for others on their side of computer screen.

And you sound like a broken record…. :violin: Which is my impression, not a scientific double blind one as I lack reference. I do not know anyone personally who keeps on hammering on things almost no one here is interested in

😀

It's always the same - either there is an excuse like in @Markw4's case - which I think is totally invalid/irrelevant anyways. I managed to produce the single relevant result (and a "half relevant" one in the retest) with very mediocre DAC, amp and speakers in the echo listening test. So you could at least whip out your "second best DAC" and headphones...

And @Evenharmonics: Same on the opposite side. Just babbling, no action.

Not sorry for getting personal. 😱😎
