Hi,

I'm reading here for some days to get some info about tweaking Cd-Players, becauese i'm looking for a good base to build on.
Now i'm using a Sony CDP-XB740QS which has the same DAC and analog stage as the SCD-xb940 and some ES-Series players (CXD9556 DAC and this strange Current-Pulse Chip and 2 OP-Amps), i think this player sounds not bad but there is some improofment possible in smoothnes of the hights. Maybe i try some bypassing.

But i need a second player and this is what this thread sould be about and i want to add a Valve-Outputstage directly fed by the DAC. The Amp is a german built 2xEL34 PP amp by Welter Transformer Company and Kef Q1 Speakers.

If found some interesting players which are possible, but i could not find out what's the better choice.

Marantz Cd4000 (almost the same as Phlips Cd723) some years old and cheap to get in nearly new condition ~70€, TDA1545 some say its a good start others don't think so, non Oversampling mod is very hard to do ony by a special Atmel Chip/Board an hacking firmware.
Spare parts are easy to get and cheap (Cdm-12)

Marantz CD5001, new, as special offer because the its succsessor is out, for ~180€, with CS4392 DAC which looks very promising, and its cousins CS4397/4398 have a good reputation in sound quality. The outputstage easily could implemented, but i have no idea if non-oversampling is practicable or if it's neccecary.
It has a Sony kss213 which should hav a long liftime or let's say a longer than the CDM-12 in the CD4000.

Marantz CD50, used in good condition for ~80€ , with the famous TDA1541, valve-stage and Nos-Mod ist easy and well known, but ist a real old thing. It has the CDM-4 drive which ist a very sturdy one compared to these drives today, but spara parts are for shure not so easy and cheap to get.

Sony CDP-710, hard to get, but i know one in good condition but with damaged remote-control, Price: ? don'know it's in ebay; KSS190, TDA1541
well built 4x OS by a special Sony Chip so it's not so easy to put in Nos-mode as other TDA1541 players with the "philips-chipset"
But some people claim that this old Sony(s) are one of the best built TDA1541 machines because of their high quality components and their better layout than the Philips based players. The drive is one of the best ever made by Sony but old and like the CDM-4 not so easy to get parts.
If this old well made drives could do something better than the new ones i don't know.....

I'm wondering how good the TDA1541 oldtimers could be compared to more modern DAC like the CS4392/97/98 or the direct sccsessors from Philips like the TDA1545, so is it worth it to modify a 20 or more year old Player, does this Players something better than newer ones?

And, why do the TDA-users do so much to disable the Oversampling, i didn't saw that Cirrus, BB,AD or Wolfson users pay so much attention to this?
Is the nos mod not neccecary on the new DACs?

What do you think?
