Hi phn,
I have seen some machines with the same transports. Certainly not all and I would not buy the cheaper one (computer type).
It's all up to you guys. Vote with your dollars. Of course, many of you have and that's why we are in this situation.

Mec...
I have never seen a 'puter cd-rom laser-mec in a real CD-player...
(-but I have seen similar things in those cheap DVD-players)
And there are a lightyear in difference on a good CD-laser mec, and what you find in ANY cd/dvd-rom.
BTW; those modern Philips CD-Pro drives are just same **** in a prettier wrapping.

What do you think you get in a high-price CD player? You get the same CDM that you find in a $20 CD ROM or burner. It's only the label that differs, and the mark-up.

When Linn takes a $1000 PC installs a Linux OS and puts it in a swank box and call it Knekt Kivor and charges $20,000 for it, is that voting with your dollars? Do you think Linn manufactures "audio hard drives"?
To me, voting with my dollars means to not support what I can only label as scams.
Actually phn,
I was hoping to stay in a more reasonable discussion. Your example is far away from the level we are talking about.
Possibly if I had the money I'd buy the Linn solution, but not if the OS was windose 😀 .
So getting back to reality. . .

Chris, you're missing my point. My only point is to not dismiss products because of price.
You have your favorite CDP and so do the other guys that posted here. All are valid. The only thing I intended was to propose something different and affordable at the same time.
But let's replace the CD burner with the CD Pro2. I still think a cheap TDA1543 DIY DAC is worth trying. It's different from the previous eight CDPs.
My 2 cents.

Hi phn,
Fair enough.
I do fail to see where I have dismissed anything due to price alone. My comments are based on technical reality and experience.
I have not proposed a favorite mechanism, but rather stated that any candidates should be of sound, stable construction using good engineering with service support after the fact. Is there anything wrong with that?
I will dismiss computer CDROM transports as I know they are inferiour in this application.

Chris... here's the scenerio.
You get home with a hankerin' to listen to either Edward Elgar or Black Sabbath. Yikes! By some strange happenstance, your digital source is burned beyond recognition. To further complicate things, a terrorist (they're all around us!) demands that you order or build another CDP... careful now, he has a gun to your head.
What are you going to do?

Hi chipco3434,
Place my thumb quickly under the hammer and eject the clip of his weapon. Then ventilate him with my .45 . Or maybe a nice Canadian Inglis 9mm. Or just play Celine Dion in the computer drive, usually gets rid of that type.
Seriously. Order the guy the cheapest, nastiest POS I can find. I'll put in my insurance claim when everything settles down and get something reasonable.
-Chris 😀

Chris,
I have not worked on any of the mechanisms as you have.
But I was under the impression that the Wadia players did use a computer type transport. And that some of the computer drives, Sanyo, Pioneer, etc. were some of the sturdiest made.
Note I didn't say produced the best audio signal. Pioneer does have a reputation for long lasting drives. Wasn't one of the solutions a few years ago was to use a Pioneer 5XX dvd player>into a separate DAC?
And if you are saying that cd players are being phased out or that the quality is dropping because the general public is buying universal, i.e. dvd players for everything, than what is one to do for hi end audio? Are we going to be forced to scrounge the thrift stores, and epay for much older models? It is a problem.

diyaudio CD player
Not to get too far off topic (though the discussion seems to be drifting some anyway 🙂 ) but is there a potential for the diyaudio CD player here? I'm thinking that what we need is a cheap transport and a lot of RAM - read all the data into RAM, re-reading as necessary to correct errors, and then replaying - accurately clocked - out of RAM. Not perhaps the cheapest solution, but more DIYable than building a bullet-proof (whoops) transport.

Hi LuckyLyndy,
I don't think Pioneer drives are any better than most the others. They were cheap which made them popular. And a big advertising engine behind them. I have repaired many.
An interesting note. Pioneer is the only supplier that sells laser heads that will not work until you adjust the diffraction grating (pain in the butt). The fad you are talking about is the cheap transport into good DAC thing. Also they tried to sell the stable platter thing equating a CD to a turntable. BZZZZZZZZ - wrong. Good advertising though.
Yeah, getting good, well made audio is a problem. But I say again, we all did it to ourselves.

Aengus,
There are players that do that. Copywrite issues are at hand because you just copied the CD - into memory. You could just as easily send it to other media or e-mail the file as play it.
I still assert that the fewer errors coming off the disc, the further ahead you are if you want good sound. If all you want is MP3 quality, then fine.
Your sound will only be as good as your source data.
Player suggestions anyone to get back to the topic ??
