What can I use as wiring

Hey, I am a complete newbie and currently planning my first project.
I want to build a simple A/B switch with volume control. I found plans and ordered parts, now the only thing missing are the wires. On the website I ordered my parts I only found "audio cable" but only on 100m rolls, wich is way too much.
Can I use cables from old/broken audio equipment or XLR cables?
If not, what do I have to search for?
Greetings

For the most part 'wire is wire'.
Depending on your project.
Tin plated copper is best. Easy to solder.
Sometimes stranded and other times solid, is easier to route and attach.
Auto parts stores have small rolls of wire, but rather pricey.
Yep, repurposed wire is often good.
Interconnect cables can be reused if;
a] RCA interconnects, a coax with a braided shield.
b]XLR interconnects. a Shielded Twisted Pair with a braided shield.

To clarify what I want to do, I attach a schematic of a project that I found online but I want to make multiple changes. First of all I will to change both inputs to RCA and I will use one RCA and one 6,3mm Jack as output. Then I will insert another switch so I can choose my output.

In the end I want to connect my monitors wich have balanced input so my first idea was to go from the RCA out to a stereo DI box and then in my monitors but now I am thinking about having an inbuilt DI. In that case I would change the RCA out to two XLR out.
As I understand it I would need two transformers for this. Do you have recommendations? Keep in mind that money is limited here so I want it to be cheaper than a Stereo DI I could buy. Lets say 70€

Thank you for your answers so far you are really helping me out.
