Hi people... I'm from Brazil and I would like to transform my radio to receive from 100MHz up to 170MHz, to hear the communication from aircrafts and towers... Somebody told me that is very simple to do this, but I don't know how to do... One new radio that receives these frequencies is very expencive... and I only wanna hear.... only receive.... Who can help me?
My e-mail is anatoli@ig.com.br
Thanks!!

I have heard that it is possible, but I could not give details. One question, for anyone reading this: what FM frequencies does your radio recieve now? I understand that varies in different parts of the world. Is it from 88 MHz up to 108 MHz, or some other band?
Also, what is the make and model of your present radio?

Hi,
This used to be possible some years ago, but it may not be with modern recievers.
What had to be done was to "loosen" (open out) the RF and oscillator coils progressively until the highest frequency broadcst stations ~100MHz have moved down to the LF end ~88MHz end of the band.
It was then necessary to convert the detector from an FM type to an AM type. This was done by disconnecting one diode.
Now days, most of the circuitry is in a chip 🙁
Cheers,

A friend of mine originally from the West Indies says that in the West Indian neighborhoods down in New York City there are guys who will put a chip into a regular boombox type radio to enable it to receive shortwave. The West Indians like listen to Caribbean cricket results, etc. It's all done on an informal, "under the table" basis, not at regualr shops.
More than this, I cannot say. But he seemed pretty sure about it. I think he mentioned the cost as being around $70.
I'll give him a call to recheck the facts, but I really do think that was the general idea. What chip they replaced, I would not know.
