Mrs K brought home three bottles of dark beer (stout) that we tried yesterday.
One was the Guiness Stout that was, I must admit "lame". Tasted diluted. We want our stout to be thick, creamy full of vanilla, chocolate, coffee ..
The second was Old Rasputin - Russian Imperal Stout. Better but not perfect.
And finally Breakfast Stout that tasted like a stout is supposed to taste.

Man, this latest pound of coffee is about the best I've had - fresh & delicious, with deep, complex flavors like some kind of liqueur. It's the same stuff I always buy; I think it must be really fresh. Makes me think that if I can get this good at the grocery store, it's probably even better (and more predictably so) from one of the local roasters that have sprung up in this area in recent years.
Only trouble is, with iced coffee I need to grind a pound at a time, which ties me to the big Bunn mill at the grocery store. I suppose I could ask the roaster place to grind it for me, since I'll be using it all right away; I've been assuming they've got their grinders dialed in for espresso, and it would be a pain for them to switch to the coarse grind I need.
What I really want is a big-*** coffee mill sitting on my kitchen counter! 😎 That way I could buy whatever beans, wherever. But damn, those things are pricey. But I set an Ebay search today anyway, so maybe I can catch a fixer-upper.
I am not entirely certain, but some claim that the coffee beans taste better a while after roasting, like 3-5 days after.
They are just happy to sell you their coffee, just ask them for a more coarse grind, and you'll get it.
Do not know what you consider an expensive grinder, but they come in many shapes and sizes.

Thanks a lot for the info, KaffiMan. The Wilfa looks like a contender, if they make one that runs on 120V.
Another possibility that occurred to me last night is to find a surplus gearmotor to attach to my vintage-style Zassenhaus hand grinder. I have done it with a variable-speed hand drill, but it's a bit cumbersome. 🙂

Speaking of snifters: Does anyone else insist on drinking pretty much everything from a glass whenever possible? Obviously it's mandatory for fine spirits as above, but I drink everything from iced coffee to Mountain Dew from a glass.
It's always seemed to me that the nose is heavily involved in the taste process, and it's just not the same from a bottle or a straw, no matter what the beverage. (Okay, except water. Maybe. 🙂)

Silver vessels is another taste again.
Jim, there must be some esoteric science behind that - but for sure
Different glass formulation tastes different ime also.
Add to this placing wine, tea, coffee etc glass on my custom drinks coaster changes the taste again.
I have read theory somewhere that taste/smell is not only key/lock molecule sensing, but also radiation/spectrum sensing.

The best coffee I have ever had, outside restaurants, was brewed in a ceramic drip coffee maker (from France). Unfortunately the one my sister in law had broke when she moved to new digs.
At the moment, I am having my Melita Breakfast Blend in a Dallmayr Ceramic mug.

Hi Grant. Yes, if you make it with vinegar, it's just not the same.
Being as you make it yourself add heat to taste. Sounds good !
