I bought this ALPS volume board off Ebay and it has pads on the back for some optional SMT components.
Any idea how or what they would be used for?

That 4th pin of the potentiometer recalls for a long forgotten loudness compensation something made when the audio equipment struggled to mantain linear response in the low/high end, when lowering the volume knob, like a kind of bypass, didnt know ALPS or any modern potentiometer manufacturer made those parts, maybe that accounts for OEM solutions
