@mark100 just don't use a high distortion low damping factor amp. But most modern style amps will be good enough, that is true (as long as they are no tube amp). The difference that is there won't matter. A cheap 50€ (or even less) asian class d chipamp is good enough. just like most vintage integrated transistor amps are good enough (on condition you can switch of the eq). I mostly use a cheap smsl amp (in my workshop). It's when i'm in my living room that i use the amp that stands there, which is an Ncore amp. But it won't be better than that smsl amp for measurements of speakers on low volume, it's just that i don't want to go to my workshop to get that smsl that I use the Ncore.
I use a Hafler TA1100 amp that I got on a closeout sale (~$60 IIRC) years ago for measurements. I think a lot of amps with reasonable specs will do the job just fine.
The computer simulations get pretty close, but I rely on listening and adjusting to refine the xo. Usually, a few iterations are needed. I have a tube amp and a SS amp in my listening room. Often, it takes days or weeks of listening to a variety of music - and using other sets of ears - to reveal problem areas.
