So here I am......Studying Electrical engineering....went to school once before for Recording Engineering.......can work the stuff can't build it yet...or more approriately haven't tried.....figured I would start with some speakers then an amp maybe........Anyone got a good project or some tips for a first project?
2-way, 2-way, 2-way... if it's a first project, anything more complex than that is too complex.
I'm plotting an active 3-way PA speaker, but I probably won't build it for another couple of years... I'm so, err, incompetent as yet 😀 Good luck, in any case--go with a 2-way, get your feet wet, and for heaven's sake, try to make it look really good. That's half the sound, after all!

PA 0r HIFI
When I originally decided to try to make some cabinets I was working for a production company.....so naturally I wanted to do PA stuff.....now I am a full time student so I think i am gonna do HIFI stuff first.......not sure though....any suggestions which way to go?

Why do you have to decide between PA and hifi? Are you going to sell your project or hang on to it?
In terms of a learning tool for an EE, I think a pretty cool idea would be to build one of the DIY designs on the net where both a parallel and a series crossover are published, and build both. Of course, this assumes $$.

.. but if you want them for you own purpose at home, then definitely start with a good HiFi speaker. Don't attempt anything too expensive for a first try. A good 2-way I would suggest; there are lots of plans, or kits floating about, depending on how much woodwork you want to do. most are basically just rectangular boxes, but still require reasonable woodworking equipment.
If you want to try something easy, but more interesting, I have plans for the ARGOS tapered pipe if you are interested, (no cost).

The other alternative is if you want to maybe work with sound with small local bands in small venues, in which case you can build some PA cabs with a nice flat response and blow a lot of commercial stuff out of the water sound quality wise.

My gamma 12 design....
... is a Pi-align cab, works very nicely.
I use cts piezo drivers for my top end, they perform very nicely with the right treatment.
