Wharfedale Super 12 RS

Hi there,

I recently joined this forum after scouring the 'net for information on Wharfedale Super 12 full range drivers, which I purchased recently.

The drivers were not mounted and the seller suggested an open-baffle design. After creating a mock-up I realised that there just isn't enough bass.

Does anyone here have any suggestions with regards to cabinets/mounting solutions?

You won't get bass with a narrow baffle like that.

Google Briggs open baffle, and you'll find the design for the much wider OB that driver was originally used with.

For any other enclosure suggestions, you would need the thiele/small parameters for that driver, and frankly I don't have a clue what they are.

Add fold back wings to make U channel. That will help bass. Add wing on top edge too otherwise all the bass will cancel on top edge.

Hi,

First check that they don't have the infamous porous
surrounds, that there is no way the surrounds will
pass air, if they do you will never get anywhere.

There are lots of different versions so I can only
roughly only guesstimate a decent box for them.

Placed near the top of a tall and wide but
not deep box that is placed against a wall.

I'd try about 3 cuft sealed and stuffed.

YMMV but i don't have a high regard for
vintage Wharfedale drivers and TBH you
could be engaging on a long pointless
exercise with drivers that are worth
far more than the performance given.

The factory cab was a 5 ft^3 damped vent reflex and later a distributed port [damped slotted back] cab and it will also work in the 8.3 ft^3 sand filled panel constructed double slot vented corner reflex [now could be considered a marginal MLTL].

The corner reflex is among my favorite configurations. Actually, somewhere in my junk I have some old David Weems plans for a prism shaped corner reflex for the Super 10.

Probably a reasonable performer. Many were, when tweaked to suit. 🙂

Well, I have two different drawings for the 8.3 ft^3 bass cab [Airdale] I listed earlier, just vertically locate the driver where it sounds best to you and of course ignore the drawing’s driver cutout dim..

The ‘one size fits all’ 5 ft^3 damped reflex cab I don’t have a drawing for, but it’s basically just a box with a bunch of slots in the back panel [some folks use braced pegboard] with damping material mounted to it, though you would have to test to find the right amount that sounds best to you in room.

Included is two smaller cab designs I forgot I had that’s specific to the 12 RS.
