I have problems using Chrome, attached pic.
I often use a Chromebook, and this is common when the web page designers don't care about
Chrome compatibility, even though it is very widely used.
I use Chrome and that looks like a Interest based web ad.
You have to opt out of those.
Also using an Ad Blocker helps too, like ABP or uBlock.
I used to use ABP all of the time but lately I have been using uBlock and it seems to work better for me than ABP.
ABP used to get kicked out of Chrome every time Chrome got update and then I would have to re-install it again.
I have not had this problem with uBlock yet since a started using it a few months ago.
Also I am using Linux mostly as well as Windows.
FWIW
jer 🙂

Here are Three links that I use to set my Opt-Outs for web based adds.
Also there is an App for Google Chrome that you should install that protects your settings and the link should be on one of those pages as well.
There also should be links to pages Opt-out for companies for your area as well.
If all else fails then the only way I Have successfully gotten rid of such maleware is to un-install chrome and delete everything chrome that you can find then do a systems restore and and re-install chrome.
Back up your Bookmarks as you may or may not lose them.
Sometimes just doing a Systems restore can fix such issues as well if they are not to serious.
Check you Chrome extensions and delete the bad ones and in your Installed Program files including any directories they may have created.
Some times those bad extensions will keep coming back and that is when doing a systems restore will sometimes take care of them.
I finally got tired of this and now I just use Linux...FWIW !!
AntiSpyware , Spybot, and Advanced Systems Care are great tools that I use to help combat such maleware as well.
Here are the Links I mentioned above,
https://www.ublock.org/
Global Opt Out | Ghostery Enterprise
Consumer Opt-out | NAI: Network Advertising Initiative
Choices and Controls | AT&T Privacy Policy
I Hope that these can Help You !! 😉

My guess would be an ad-supported extension.
Merlin, have you tried deactivating the installed extensions one by one?
You can access them by copying the expression "chrome://extensions" into chrome's location bar (e.g. via copy&paste).

Many thanks the problem isn't an extension.
