"Suicide cords" were a common alternative to that. Just a basic power cord, plug on one end, and a pair of clip leads on the other. Used to clip mains power to a transformer for test, or to get power to a power supply subassembly when the rest of the mains connections were in a chassis elsewhere.

There are safe alternatives, with shrouded connectors for bare wires, a lid with a power interlock and a power indicator. One available in the UK is called Rendar Safeblock (or something like that).

That is great, definitely from a bye gone era. In reality it is no more dangerous than a $2 cell phone charger from China.

I call it 'wife-be-gone'. Plug the adapter into the AC outlet and give your wife a piece of speaker wire and ask her to connect it...

The Quicktest mains connector is a safer alternative that is actually quicker to connect to:

That Quicktest is what I know as a Safeblock. Surely someone imports them into North America?

I've never seen one. However any local hardware store sells replacement male plugs which open up and have three screw terminals. It would take a few moments longer than the wire clips in the Safeblock, but other than clip wires, I can have one on the end of a power cord in a minute or two.
