I´m beginning to formulate a finished plan for my main speaker project. However, some bumps in the road to bliss are bound to appear.
I´m expecting 4 pieces of 12" peerless SLS woofers. A H-shaped enclosure per channel seemed like a good way to go. At least they are easy to build. The downside is thier size.
Now, looking through Linkwitz site, a W-shaped enclosure ( http://www.linkwitzlab.com/woofer.htm ) seems more suitable. So. How do i contsruct such enclosures for my woofers ? Can i use Linkwitz original plan with some modifications ?
Any help would be appriciated.

Well, it's slightly wider and not as deep as the XLS, but you could probably just adapt the XLS plans with a bigger cutout.
As to its suitability for dipole, I assume you've done due diligence.

How will you be driving these?
One channel or two?
Does your amp give more into 8 ohms or 4 ohms?
Remember, two 8 ohm woofers in parallel equal 4 ohms.
As for the SLS unit itself-some good, some not so good. The not so good-instead of having a ± 12.5 mm excursion, you go down to ± 9 mm. It should be pointed out that ±9 mm is still a pretty hefty excursion compared to most woofers. Still other woofers have more these days. Heck, TC sounds makes a subwoofer that has an excursion of ± 38 mm. But that is an exceptional woofer.
The good news is that the SLS has an aluminum Faraday ring, just like the XLS and other good brands. This gives a symmetrical magnetic system, and is a mark of quality. Another way of achieving a symmetrical magnetic system is an extended pole piece, or extended core. But the Faraday ring, because it reduces inductance, probably gives a slightly snappier sound.
The SLS is a step down in the Peerless line from the XLS, but it still retains some good features from the XLS, and has a fairly decent excursion itself.
Linkwitz mentions noise when the speaker hits high excursions. No way to know this without measurement, but if I had to hazard a guess, I would say that the Peerless SLS probably does well in this category as well. It should be pointed out that Linwitz tests other speakers for midrange use elswhere on his site, and he consistently prases Peerless products for testing out well for the money, (Scan Speak usually tests out better, but often not by too much).
Without actually testing the speaker, you are of course taking a chance in substituting one speaker for another. But the Faraday ring and other features would make one feel that this substitution is probably a good gamble, assuming the impedance/amp combo works well. 🙂

kelticwizard: I havent got a stereo amp at the moment but it will be purshased when i think the design is right. So, for the moment a single W-baffle will be built and driven by a monoamp from BK-electronics. Its pretty stable in its performance.
The main argument for me when i ordered the SLS woofers is that i got a wery good deal regarding price ( and of course that the drivers where good designs ).
As you say its a bit of a gamble im taking but thats what diy is all about isnt it ? 🙂

Where did you get those SLS woofers and at what price? Here in Germany, you can only get XLS and XLS-car. I may be able to order to an address in Sweden...

None of the distributors in the USA or Canada carry the SLS series either, even though they carry just about every other series. Now that I know that Germany, which borders Denmark, doesn't carry them either, methinks the Scandinavians have decided to keep these all to themselves. 😀 😀

Below 80 Hz, the two are very similar, and the motor assembly seems to be about the same. So does the Fs and the Vas. The 831857 is poly, the SLS is coated paper.

I'm interrested in the sls, i know its fairly new but has anyone used it?. It seems it has a good price/quality ratio i gues...
While waiting for the drivers, a friend of mine is going to lend me his H-baffles for a while to see how they behave in my apartment. Its going to be interresting indeed.

That would be really nice...
Just talked to a designer who has used them in a box-type application. Apparently, the cone is pretty soft, and the 2 kHz spike is probably an underdamped former/cone resonance, so probably not what one would look for in a dipole woofer. Seems to be more like another variety of the XLS subwoofer boom-boom theme....
What I'd like to know: on the d-s-t homepage, it seems the SLS drivers sport vented pole pieces (rather unusual for Peerless) and possibly Kapton formers. Is this true of the SLS 263 or 313?

About the noise we get from woofers
When I used these drivers I had two choices to tame some of extranious noise. Remove the dust cap ( not visually appealing when you are selling the system ) or vent the spider assembly. I did the latter by melting six holes in the cone beneath where the dustcap is and up above the voice coil former/ spider joint from underneath the externally visible cone. Take a look under a woofer to understand what I mean. If you going to attemt this rest the soldering iron against the basket to keep it steady. This did clean up some of the midrange quite a bit.

Is this really the SLS you are talking about? It has a vented spider and should also have holes in the cone.
I´ve recieved the drivers a while ago. Due to lack of money i havent been able to build much of anything yet 🙁
But chrismas is around the corner and my paycheck seems promising so building begins around newyear.
Visual impressions so far: The drivers seems to be deasently build. It has stamped metal gasket but in a very open design. As capslock pointed out its vented behind the spider and just as the xls range it has holes behind the dustcap. Pretty rigid rubber surround and coated paper cone.
Off course nothing above tells me what they vill sound like. However, if it sounds like crap in a OB design i could probably sell them with little or nothing to loose finansially.
