Is there anywhere that sells large old fashioned VU meters? Not led types but the ones with pointers that used to be put on older poweramps. Kinda like the old phase linear or mcintosh equipment.
This is somewhat dependent on whether you want a
meter with "genuine" per-the-spec VU ballistics. There
were only a couple companies AFAIK that made such
ones. All that I've seen were pretty frumpy 1940s looking.
There are many others that look like VU meters
but aren't "real" ones. I'd check the various surplus
places, Ebay, etc. Distributors like Newark or Allied
might have them as well.
McIntosh is the ultimate in sexy appearance but a lot
of that is due to the blue glow of the edge-lit glass front
panel.
One can also buy DC meter movements and create some
op-amp circuitry to do a VU-like metering with home made
VU scale to replace whatever scale came with the meter.

www.allelectronics.com has a lot of VU meters. they look kinda ghetto, but they are cheap, and i imagine you can remove them from their housing and make them look any way you want them too... many different types too.
I have cool VU-meters at my old MOSFET amp, from 1984. Brand was Kyoritsu. My meters were KM-106(?), large ones 86 x 100 mm approx. I had also attached LED's in the scale. Unfortuneatly the seems to be hard to find these days.
