I agree - this driver is the best, followed by the FE166E

😎
I know you had a FE166ES-R and gather you left out the unavailable limited editions, care to comment on that one?

I have a small collection of Fostex drivers but not all are in enclosures yet. Of the ones I have playable, they include the FE126e, FX120 and F120A. Of these, I prefer the F120A.

Next on the list (enclosures being built this week) are the XXX, ...FE138ES-R.

Regards, KM
Some strong of opinions on that one, I'm interested in what do you're planing on constructing for the 138ES-R?

FE138...
Man i sure want to like these little guys--Alnico mags, pretty cones & baskets...
I haven't got them to sound decent yet though.
Took them over to Phil's last week, compared 138s in BVRs to Feastrex's in BVRs.
Phil got a new J2 amp said it totally changed the way the Feastrex's sounded.
It did (compared to the 45 SET).
It also totally changed the was the 138s sounded.
The mids sounded totally different, much better, no longer "muffled."
Like a whole different driver.
Not as good as the FE108ES II, and very different personality to the Feastrex and Lowther that was there.
Bass was about the same as before, highs, well Phil can't hear highs so it works for him, but highs got rough, harsh...

Strong opinions? I simply stated that I have heard 3 different Fostex drivers and have a preference, how is that a strong opinion??

As for the FE138ES-R... I recently noticed that Madisound had a simple ported enclosure recommended for this driver on their website. I've taken my pair and broke them in on the bench then measured multiple times with a WT2 to get accurate T/S parameters (which are very close to each other) and then used them to model a ported enclosure which basically matched what Madisound shows, so I opted to build a pair of BB enclosures.

A BVR for the FE138ES-R? Do you have plans?

that was misconstrued. was referring to opinions of others here wrt the 138ES-R, sorry that it didn't read that way :

Next on the list (enclosures being built this week) are the FF85K and FE138ES-R. I'm also doing a 2-way based on the FW168HR and T250D. Others which still need enclosures include the FF125K, FE108EZ and some NOS FE108Sigma drivers.

you've stated intent not opinion and that your preference was towards ''playable" ones which correct me if i read you wrong didn't include the 138.

They're posted in the (long) 138 thread on this page:

I wouldn't recommend them though...
Tried different amounts of felt inside, placement, etc.
The wife suggested plugging the two vents, making them into a sealed box, even that was better...
Liked them better in a TL.
Have a pair of swans, they sound a lot better.
Gonna try the Nessies next.

Gotcha, no problem.... and you're right, I've not had the FE138ES-R drivers playing yet. But I've been wanting to get them running so I finally did a small (7 liters) ported enclosure of 12mm BB. I hope to have them playing within the next 2 weeks. The boxes are cut and assembled (sans the back), but I need to mount the driver, line the box with wool felt and add the port tube (plus some finishing).

I also did a variation of Planet10's uFonken for the FF85K which are for my son, so they will probably take precedence on final assembly and finishing ;-)

Thanks Robert,

I forgot about that... re-read some of the long thread. I just don't want anything as large as the swans for these. No idea how the small boxes I'm building will work out but I want to start with something reasonably quick.

Would be interested to hear your feedback on the Nessie once you build them.

jack k., aka "kloss" already built the nessie/138
i thought this BLH to be interesting - http://makizouphoto.hp.infoseek.co.jp/furukawa7.html i also posted a link somewhere in the long 138 thread of another BLH built. ifirc, there was a guy in japan who had a very different design which he thought could work with the 138, bringing the LF in line with the HF.
