Volumio 3 help needed please

Hi folks. I am new to RPI and Volumio and have a 15 day trial of Premium. I have my library of AIFF files connected to RPI4 via a USB HD and they play fine. I can also play Amazon Prime Music through airplay. Using an IPad air4 as controller. The player App works great. Very fast response to track changes etc. I normally use upsampling and cannot get it to work. Enabling it and setting the Resampling to 88 or 176, 24 or 32 bits and saving the new settings does not seem to change the output. Both the DAC, a DDDaac 1794 with Wave IO board and the Volumio UI continue to indicate 44k, 16bit regardless of Resampling settings. What is disappointing is that I cannot seem to find any help on the Volumio forum. I understand that 3 is newish but I cannot establish if the Resampling feature is even working at this point in V 3 development. Some of this may be my fault for not being an experienced user but I don’t think I will be going forward with a subscription if I can’t sort this simple issue. I will then be looking for recommendations for other software to play my local ripped CD library, so if anyone here can help or has experience with other software to do the job please lend a hand here.

Haven’t had any luck on the community forum. I am trying to get help from the support folks at Volumio but it is slow work. aparently the Volumio UI does not display the resampled playback parameters but only the native file specs. That seems like an omission to me. Anyway, I am still not getting Resampling happening with the RPI4 and Volumio 3 into the same dac as my usual source which is a Mac mini running Puremusic. The PM UI displays the upsampling info so you know exactly what you are playing. The DAC has LEDs to indicate the sampling rate and in fact when I checked the dac documentation no sample rate leds are lit no matter if the file is native or resampled in Volumio 3. It lights the host active and audio streaming leds only. It sounds quite alright playing from USB through a W4S Recovery USB reclocker. I know the dac sounds better in my system when up sampled to 176k so I would like that feature to work, or at least know up front if it will work or not. The IOS app is very responsive. Instant response to inputs for track change, play, mute etc. Too bad the feature set is not fully in place, which it should be if you are going to charge a yearly subscription fee.

Under settings:
General Playback Options:
At the very bottom of the window have you set audio resampling to your desired value.?

I have used a boss2 dac which piggybacks onto the RPI4 that certainly worked with resampling when I last used it.

I am guessing the wave i/o board is using USB directly from the RPI4?

Yes, USB direct from RPI4 through a W4S Recovery reclocker then to the WaveI/o board. I have set the sample rate and bits to various combinations and I always see the same result at the dac. The indicator LEDs are driven from the Wavi/o board.
Something is not quite right between the Wave i/o and Volumio/RPI. WaveI/o is recognized as an output source by Volumio. One Thing I haven’t done is remove the Recovery from the signal path. The Mac Mini/Pure audio setup worked with it in there but maybe it is causing issues for RPI. Worth a shot to maybe give some clues to what is going on.

The Volumio user group and Volumio people will get back to you regarding this I am sure.

I guess if not many people are using wave i/o then it could be a rare mismatch or some weirdness with drivers. Did you have to select it from the large list of devices or was it automatically detected? Do you have a friend with another USB DAC you could try?

Volumio are very helpful in my experience,, tempered by the fact that they can be busy with work. Also it is getting into summer vacation time so it only needs somebody to be out for a few weeks to slow things down.

Volumio Tech Support have told me they can’t support all DIY efforts. I can understand this. I like the overall package. Pure Music was good but Channel D has let PM languish while they concentrate on Pure Vinyl and digital phono preamps etc. They have limited staff and have picked their product development priorities. No support for Apple Silicone for PM is a good symptom of this. So I am trying to eliminate a Mac mini from the household computer inventory by using RPi and Volumio to replace it. What is so impressive is how snappy the IOS App is on my IPad. Feels like a direct connection to the software from my fingertip when selecting tracks, albums etc. Much better than the glitchy PM and Apple remote approach I am used to. So, I have an Allo Digione coming and I can try an I2S implementation of SPDIF input to my DAC. That will remove the WaveI/O USB board from the equation. I’m looking forward to seeing how the sound compares - USB on Mac Mini vs SPDIF via Digione and RPi.

I have been using the RPI4 Volumio3 Alo Digione setup for a few months now. There are a few issues with using Manifest but the contemporary UI works fine and I prefer it. Happy so far and just haven’t had the time to pursue any changes or upgrades.
