Volume Pot vs Stepped Attenuater

As promised a report on the West Labs pots.

The guitar amp build is finished and the amp is very quiet. On the normal channel gain and MV of 80% gives audible hiss but God forbid that you stand in front of the amp and hit a power chord without earplugs in. :xeye: Bringing in the bright channel adds some noise but it is still a fraction of the desired output. If you are far enough away to not damage your hearing it sounds dead quiet.

The only problem I had is that the pot on the bright channel produces an audible click in the speaker when turning all the way down. I understand that this is not uncommon in pots of all types and I am not sure what I can do circuitry wise to correct it but it is not a huge problem anyway.

Over all they seem to be a quality product as far as I can tell.

Of course in this application I really didn't have the opportunity to do comparative listening that would be relevant to hifi.

I have used a few different stepped attenuators from Ebay including:

SMD type

and also the vishay/dale ladder type:

vishay dale ladder type

The SMD one is a series attenuator; the vishay dale is ladder type. In all honesty I think I prefer the SMD although both are excellent and I'm not confident I could tell the difference in a blind test.

I don't see why anyone would buy a potentiometer when stepped attenuators can be had for so little money. I absolutely agree that the balance at low volume levels is a serious advantage, aside from the increased transparency.

The Vishay Dale ladder looks having fake ''Dale'' to me. Will channel match good anyway.
