Volume control using a DS1802

I was reading the datasheet for the DS1802 and was rather disappointed that I could conclude it is not possible to use dual supply analog signals. I mean pos. and neg audio signals are not possible.

I need to use V+/2 as vitual ground for the audio signal?🙁
So I apply Vaudio+(V+/2) at the high end of the resistor chain and AGND at the low end. This means I need caps at the input and output to get the DC-offset out of the audio signal. 🙁

Are there alternatives for this devices where I can use dual supplies? (±5V)

Why don´t you use PGA2310 or PGA2311?

Hi neighbour,

I used the DS1802 three years ago in a preamp. I didn't had a problem with it. I just used the ground of the supply as the "-" and set a regulator (78l05) between the +15VDC from the rest of the electronics and the DS1802.

I don't use the IC anymore. Actually, I've almost not used the IC.
My plans changed in the middle off the progress. But I can say that it worked 😉
So if you have any interests, let me now?

I'll have a look at their datasheets. Also the mono AD5220BN50 looks nice to me.

there are compatible devices to the PGA2310 / 11 from crystal or so- but the Burr Brown has the better sample policy...

I'm still in the design-fase. So looking onto alternatives is still very important.
In the meantime I found the application note 161. That discribes the way the DS1802 is best implemented. Doesn't look that bad but I'm not such a fan of adding DC first and then removing it again.

I sayed that I almost didn't used it, only for testing. Probably I was drunk when I did that. Probably to many Opsale's. 😉

Hmmmmm Ops-Ale.....has been a long time.....

I already recieved the DS1802's. 😀
I'm ordering the PGA2310 / 11 right now.
Next up is the DS1267-050 from Dallas. 🙂

Does anyone know what happens when a DS1802 is powered down? Does it min or max the attenuation? Does the zero crossing cease to work?

I think you can find that in the datasheet. I know the wiper starts at the low end position on power-up. (not mute but pos 63)

I've checked and only the power up situation is described. The reason I ask is whether or not the signal will be "popped" when power is removed. For instance if zero-X is disabled, and the chip runs up/down the ladder, then will be a transient DC at each resistance change.

I'm just trying to figure out (or avoid) the extra protection circuit.
