The old pot idea is great but the difference between springing for a $3.95 bushing and a free pot is well, $3.95. Just putting tha
Nut-pick's are for when you get crab lice.If you don't have lock ring pliers you can usually nudge the ring off with a small screwdriver. I don't even want to know what a nut-pick is... 🙂
I like the idea of reusing the bushing from a potentiometer. That's excellent.
Tom

I've got a load of old busted pots/bushings for parts here.
Thanks for all the help. Double back here with one more question
Most of the front collars in these kits are less that 10mm long. My front plate is 10mm.
Since I'm able to make clean holes with my drill press, could I just skip the front collar and run a rod straight through my front panel?
That makes sense to me but maybe I'm missing something

Best to use a bushing, lubed with Super Lube grease, for a nice "feel".
You're saying that even with high speed, good bits, and lube I won't be able to manufacture something comparable to an average bushing?Bad idea.

haha cool. I believe it. Think I could get away with something like a press-fit bushing? the ALU is relatively softI'm saying from experience.
Today I was at micro center, home Depot, and a great neighborhood old school hardware store
The local hardware had steel and brass rods, but none of the 3 had coupling nuts or bushings
The hunt continues

jeez, that sounded awfully snarky. Not all of us have been building for decades and have experience knowing every fiddly detail. In fact, the OP was actually trying to learn something. I was only trying to help.Or to paraphrase: "I bought stuff at the cheapest outlet available and now I'm shocked to find that it's not machined to precision tolerances". Um. Yeah... About those TPS reports...
