Hey JT,
That looks pretty good could you tell us about it, in some detail, please. The DVD is (would be) enclosed in the case?
I keep having this recuring dream where I am looking for a good place to setup my portable Drive-in Theatre screen.
Basicly it is (would be) an old chevy cargo van that has a huge, rear firing, Mega DIY LCD projector in it. The screen is a big silvered tarp that I would hang between football goal posts, on the side of a barn, or somthing similar. I am guessing it must be 25' - 50' wide but I never get to put the screen up at all.
In the dream I have checked out the LCD and I think it must be like 20" or maybe a bit bigger. The fresnel is atleast double that and the light source is some kind of stadium fixture firing down onto a mirror from the roof. A big cooling system on top keeps it cool I think but its funny cause that is just an AC unit like you see on top of RVs.
Anyway it has the same kind of FM audio low power transmitter for sound and if I could ever find the damn football field in my dream I could set it up and test it. Seems they keep moving the field on me though. Mr. Sandman is teasing me as usual.
Anyone know what the hell this dream means? 😕
Sorry if I am misunderstanding the purpose of this thread, I am assuming it is for projects invisioned, right?
CB.

Hey JT,
I like the look of it, but was wondering what the top "Overhang" is for/enclosing?
I suck at Cad, so I'll have to discribe My ideal....
It'd be about the size of JTbullet's and would also have the "lens arm" that retracted for storage. It would have a nice wood case for the S.O. pleasing factor. I think of it unfolding out of a case or just removing a cover to use it.
Maybe some day....

The overhang is actually where the light is. It shoots towards the back, is reflected down via a 45 degree mirror, and back out through the lcd via another 45 degree mirror. This makes the projector much thinner than if I just nailed my sd-305 to the wall!

Maybe it means that you need a new hobby? I hear there's a good DIY LCD Anonymous group somewhere.... 😉

Nietzsche gives dreams perspective
"Our entire dreaming discloses the possible causes of all our motives." - Friedrich Nietzsche
Perhaps you want to build a projector sooooo big a football field would be to small for it.
hence you don't actually want to find it.
You are getting sleeeeeeeepy
IF you did find it your diy project would be finished at long last.
veeerrrry sleeeeepy
as we all know, we'll never stop,we will go on,we will nevah surrendah!!!
Now for my idea.I want to put it all behind a wall and project through a hole in said wall. Use RF to control it all on my computer. when I'm done, just hang a picture on the wall to cover the hole. Have it all wired for surround sound with motorized screen so a touch of a button will be all thats needed to begin the show. Kinda like the BATCAVE.
Oh boy, now who's dreaming?

nice renderings. so tell me, what program are you using? i am into 3dsmax. and i had the same idea of visualizing some projektor ideas. its hard waiting for the parts beeing shipped, so in the mean time i can build up my virtual beamer, heh.
rightnow i am woring on this damn fresnel, i get ugly distortion effects because of the thin rings...

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.
I am using Cinema 4d 8.1. It is quite nice, very powerful and stable, very few available plugins so I dont go broke!
I think your problem is that you are being TOO realistic.
If you thicken your rings and make them a little fewer in
number, youll get less moire, but the moire will actually
appear in real life to a small extent. A post effect blur,
or tinkering with AA settings may help as well. This has been
the universal question fin animation for years. The fresnel shader you see is actually a shader that simulates anistropic rings in metal. I just modified it to glow!
Thanks for the kind words. Hope we'll see some pictures from others soon!

I suck at rendering, so words will have to do.
Idea #1: Mini Projector
This would be a small projector, capable of projecting a 20" or 25" image, or something around there. The idea would be to make something as compact as possible. What would be the point? To have a relatively large size TV that is very portable. An LCD from a pocket TV would probably be adequite for this use. Ultra-Bright white LED's, while too dim for a full size projector, might be usable for a small projector like this, that would only be projecting from several feet away(probably). If LED's were bright enough, than it could possibly even be battery operated, making it truly portable.
There was gonna be an idea #2, but I forgot it after explaining Idea #1. D'oh!

heh cinema 4d...is widely used here in germany, and the price is good. but i prefere 3dmax...wich ofcourse i can't afford yet actually but...whatever.
the idea of making a small projektor is not that bad. mabe it could be used like normal CRTs. so projecting on the back of the screen. but 25" is still a little small. all the trouble for such a small screen? i would make something like a big screen TV. mabe then the LED plan would work! but do we know how to get them to produce homogen light? no hotspots?

jtbullet, have you seen this projector? Iti s shown on the diylabs result page(thrid one down), and there's a link to the guy's webpage. It looks VERY similar to what you are trying to do, perhaps you could conatact the creator for more info. Good luck, your projector/htpc design looks very promising!

now i know where i knew it from: http://www.mdc.nicsystems.com/
very good results considering the simple setup. he doesn't even have a kondensor lens, thats why he can project the image at greater distance.

okeee, i got it!
3dmax scanline renderer just is not up to the task. but brazil is. its one of those cool plugin renderers which can realy produce the best redner results possible today. check this out and know what i mean: http://www.splutterfish.com/sf/gallery_index.php
ok here my result using this brazil with image sampling of 2/2.
the glass material is not quite realistic now, but it takes a long time rendering this biatch and i will probably post more realistic results later, when i got my whole projektor done in max. which by the way is not done yet in real life so be patient.
btw, the fresnel effekt is only a bump map here, still amazingly realistic i think...
