I got some Vishay transistors from RS supplies later last year for my Salas Reflektor D builds. I thought they looked cheap and nasty with a shiny almost chrome dipped look to them and messy part numbers.
Recently got some of the same from Mouser and they look different again. No horrible shiny coating on the metal, nice clear legible writing, different notches on the tab.
Just different batches? Both come from China apparently

I think you nailed that....the RS is suffix PBF which I assume means PlumBum Free!

I knew that, but still coudn‘t resist...
They are both Pb free devices, major distributors stopped selling Pb parts years ago. They are just from different plants (the datasheet actually shows this), both will be fine it's just cosmetic. Probably the same die in both.

It was a great mistake pulling Latin from curriculum.

Not always true, long production life parts like this have been migrated from fab to fab and had process changes. These are shrinks of the cell geometry, which allow the same Rds etc to be achieved with slightly smaller die, increasing profit per wafer.....Probably the same die in both.
The snag is that the linear operation SOAR specs have got worse over the years

Can’t change process or geometry without issuing a PCN or use a new part code. At least that is what reputable companies do.
