Visaton WS17E/8

Hello,

I'm a complete noob as far as building speakers; I have built 2 pairs, but just copied existing designs.
Now, I would like to adapt this design - https://www.visaton.de/en/products/fullrange-systems/stella-light - and use the Visaton WS17E/8 (as I already have 2 of these) instead of the W170S.
This is the original driver - https://www.visaton.de/de/produkte/chassis/tieftoener/w-170-s-8-ohm
And this one is mine, the one I'd like to use instead - https://www.visaton.de/de/produkte/chassis/tieftoener/ws-17-e-8-ohm

I found on the Visaton forum that somebody tried this, but with the 4ohm version and the specs are quite different - https://forum.visaton.de/forum/gale...kleine-standbox-mit-ws17e-und-frs8m-stella-ul

Visaton offers a design software, just that it only has a Windows version and I can't use it. If anyone can recommend me a total closed volume for the driver (as I understand, a closed box would be a good bet for this driver) and the updates needed to the original or the adaptation crossover, I think I can manage from there.

Thank you!

I found the project at Visaton. The bpj projekte file is included and easily modified.

I didn't really understand the FAST setup in Boxsim 1.2, but swapping the woofer makes a considerable difference with everything else default:

The dotted line is the W170S-8.

The optimiser came up with this for 25L or so closed box.

I don't like that 2.2R in the fullrangers circuit. Might drive it too hard on bass. You usually minimise resistance in the treble circuit.

Comes out as this:

But look alright. I think a second order series filter might be an option. But I'm too tired tonight to explore further.

Does look like the fullranger needs some sort of level reduction.

Best, Steve.

@PeteMcK, I can't honestly say I have wondered that myself. But a series MTM with the 4 ohm WS17E might have merits IMO.

I have been boxsimming 1.2 again this morning.

We have a plan!

Just using the 150uf/3mH crossover causes ISSUES in my opinion.

The dotted line at the top is the frequency response on axis with the Visaton crossover. It has an awkward bump at 200Hz and a rising response from the fullranger.

How audible this will be, especially off-axis is hard to say.

But I did think this circuit does the right things in the bass. The 0.2mH coil might help too. Hard to say. You might buy two 75uF capacitors and try both. A 0.2mH coil is also a useful size for future projects even if you don't like it here.

Hasta La Vista, Steve.
