Visaton BG20 in a ZU-like box - opinions?

I cannot tell you if the efforts are worth the time you need to spend into this project, but it seems to me that you are curious and want to try out new stuff for yourself.
Some people tried to implement a phaseplug:
Visaton BG20 Phaseplug 1 | bg20, do it yourself, lautsprecher, phaseplug, visaton | hifi-forum.de Bildergalerie
Others like in the previous links added magnets to the drive and also the whizzectomy.
Whatever you do make a documentation and try to measure the differences to see if you are getting better or not.
I think in a german forum i have read that someone removed the whizzer and dustcap and added a tweeter in the middle to achieve a coax, but in the end the project failed...

It really depends on your personal goals...HiFi starts always with big dreams 😉

I will probably just do them all🙂 I really need to get some measuring gear, but am still quite lost as what to get. I want the bare minimum. I don't need it spot on, just to see if a mod made a change. And how. Would be a great learning experience.

Weird **** whizzer

I am still investigating what to do with the drivers' HF beaming... trying very hard to avoid whizzer removal and adding a tweeter.
So while I was google image searching for ideas (site: 6moons audio reviews: JohnBlue Audio Art JB8), I came across the image in the attachment. The thing that got my attention first were the foamy disks on the underside of the whizzer. I guess the guy knows what he's doing - put those there to kill bell modes and allso add a little mass to the whizzer cone - thereby reducing its efficiency and killing some shoutiness? I hope I got it right.
But, what is blowing my mind is the spherical "phase plug". What is that there for? Has anyone any idea how the reflections look on that one?

I suggest purchase a mini dsp or HD version with bundled mic. I will be.
I think you have done well. You can modify the BG 20 to your hearts content with few regrets due to its inexpense. Its no turd just an inexpensive driver with the inherent compromises that entails. Use sims as a guide and not the absolute arbitar of audio truth. You will know that when you feel inwardly relaxed @ the music they make. That is only achieved the old fashioned way by experimenting & trial and error.

This is optimized for its hypnotic powers. I makes you think this is better than anything else and worth a lot of money.

Seems there is a lot of magical stuff in audio lately...

I had the model of Pana-sonic shown in the video link below from the 1960's in a little factory Karlson "Eight" enclosure. Unfortunately I think mine had voice coil damage so would only play at lower levels. IIRC it might have dated back to the late 1950's and the advertisement had a review of it being good for the money

Do you know what the ball is supposed to do?

There is a minidsp+mic bundle? I guess I really will have to buy something.
My CNC guy told me he can't make my speakers at the moment, so I decided to build my own CNC😛
Meaning this project is almost on hold, but it also means I can really think stuff through.

These seem to be the most effective plugs. Modern production methods can produce. Made out of natrual skin emulating silicone.
They even have ones shaped like Donald Trumps toupee. I thought we were discussing ........... Oh sorry PHASE plugs. Wrong plug discussion. Oops!

I must say that apparently, dirty minds think alike, I just didn't want to be the first one to point to the similarity to another kind of plug... 😛

Back to the "Phase" variety of the plugs. These seem to reflect some of the HF back into the cone. Notthing to do with dispersion, just some HF taming. That is my guess, at least.

There have been a plethora of weird and unusual looking phase plug shapes that have been tried over the years to tame the usual ragged top end response of whizzer cone full rangers.
Stamm tried apparently quite successfully on modified Loth X a jagged 45° zig zag cut to the outer edge of the whizzer cone. To valves as phase plugs C/O Decware to doorknobs on steroids with the Beauhorn. Perhaps the ultimate phase plug has eluded us because it is currently employed further south. If true thousands of plugs worldwide will thank you for their true calling having been discovered.
