Hi i have built a test cabinet with two Visaton Bg 20 in it as per this design:-

I built them without the cross over since i wanted to try them without a cross-over. Also the test cabinet was built out of foam board, since it was easy to cut with a knife and i has some about.
I have two main issues, one the lack of bass and second the fact they are bot hissing a lot. Now the amp i have use an 41hz Amp3 and heavily modded sonic impact do not produce any noticeable hiss on my other speakers, is this an issue with full range drivers?
Also is the lack of rigidity of the foam board why they lack bass or is this an issue with the speaker? I am thinking that the bass is deforming the cabinet rather than pumping out bass? Any ideas?
I know foam board is a silly material to build with but for a couple of week till i go home and use my dads table saw i had no other option.
I would have thought that 2 8" driver could generate some serious bass.
Anyway thanks for any comments in advance, it's my first speaker build so please dont be too harsh.

the crossover has a voltage divider to tame the tweeter, so without the crossover the tweeter will be much louder than the woofers, ergo, no bass. The hiss could also be caused by the missing xover, 'cause both drivers are playing in areas where they should not!
well not neccesarily accurate, the BG20 is more of a fullranger than a woofer and the frequency response published at visaton shows a rolloff starting at ca. 130 Hz, Visaton recommends using a sub with this speaker..

Sorry i forgot to say no tweeter either, i have just connected the drivers straight to the amp. I simply used the design shown since in must be roughly ok for the main drivers with or without a tweeter.

Can't say anything about the hissing without hearing it other than it may be an air leak but the foam box will not give you any bass. Especially with that high of a rolloff. I think LC's right that you need a woofer to go with it.

So... 🙂 Actually these drivers are capable of delivering some great bass, but not in this type of cabinet.. This is small closed cab which is just good for pro aplications-it can handle more power but without bass.. Another thing: you cannot use two fullrangers this way-without crossover. So the solution is throw away this cabinets and build some more suitable cabs (there are some nice designs for this drivers out there, try google.. ) also if you want to use two drivers in the same cab you have to roll off HF of one driver.
It is a good driver just need to be used correctly.

thanks for the replies, the issue is that i will be using the speaker for a portable battery power active speaker setup. It needs to be quite small, any idea how i can use these drivers in a smallish cabinet to get reasonable bass reasponse. The unit need to go pretty loud on a portable amp which is why i chose a large small range driver, i simply need a high 96 rating. All the design i have found have been for a large floor standing speaker rather than the single portable unit i and trying to design, maybe an open baffle would be best?
