This morning I got an idea on how to smuggle a MEH based stereo system into my living room - build them into a console style cabinet to serve as a TV stand. The picture is a random one from internet - it would have to be a bit more modern looking, but I hope you get the idea.
2 x Fane Sovereign 8-225 + 1" driver in my SPL Runt clones should work well in this.
The placement would not be ideal, but ot should work. I need to try this arrangement with the separate boxes one day to find out if it is worth the effort🙂

I’m doing a retrofit build for my daughter this spring. Here in the U.S., there are tons of these old consoles available on Facebook Market Place and similar online buy/sell sites. She’s a millenial so the legs are coming off and it’s getting the mid century curved trellis legs of course. We’re doing a pair of 12” Dayton woofers that are suprisingly flat out to 3k along with some JBL knock off horns and 1” CDs yet to be sourced. She’s using this for home theater in front of and below a wall mounted flat screen so we found a Zenith unit from the early 60’s with a central lift up top……the center channel will be mounted to the underside of that so when the top is lifted, the center will be exposed and at around a 15 degree angle for listening. Plenty of extra cabinet volume in there so we’re hoping to add a 15” downfiring subwoofer as well.
Sorry for the rant….ooops…..your post got me excited to work on it now that spring is close……that and it’s in my garage taking up way to much space at the moment. Only thing I would add is that if you can source one used where you are, the retro fit is a lot easier and cheaper given the cost of materials these days. Happy building ….or hunting! Lol

It’s in the garage under a painters tarp with some crap stacked on top but I’ll try and google an image of it……it was a very popular unit back in the day when they were cranking these out in the US…..i remember as a kid nearly every house had one……and the uniqueness was I guess they were available with different grill designs and wood finishes……but inside they were all the same. I couldn’t find the Facebook listing pix in my history……I bought it back in September and haven’t touched it since………my daughter isn’t exactly happy about that. Lol
You must have read my mind. Here is a quick render of a similar but more modern version I'm doing for myself. The MEHs run from 80Hz on up.
Yes! I was also thinking to have something more modern, but the examples are not really numerous.
Do I see correctly there are asymetric horns? That is also something I considered - but in vertical direction since I thought about floor placement.

I know the thread has been stale for a few months. But want to chime in. I've designed a console specifically for audio. I'm sharing a render below and will actual photos in the coming days. The speakers are custom design: a 10" 2-way aperiodic (think Dynaco A25 but much more volume) using Seas drivers course. The a25 derivatives may get bi-amped with Hypex Ncore. The piece will contain a streamer / DAC / Fifo / battery PSU from Ian Canada as the primary source. The top compartment will hold a turntable. But that is not yet planned for this project. The aesthetic of this piece is mid-century modern. Some have commented the design has a nordic vibe. In this round, the exterior sections are solid Parota. The interior sections are MDF with Parota veneer. All electronics are hidden from view in an enclosed section of the cabinet. Wifi, bluetooth, ethernet, Roon end point, Airplay2, UPnP. And room for vinyl storage below. The piece is about 6' long. I have other versions planned - smaller size (6' is big), some with DSP, some full analog. What do you think?
