vintage driver codes

Okay, maybe there's already a thread on this, but I can't seem to find it. Can someone tell me how to read the codes on vintage drivers? Are there any general rules, or did each manufacturer do their own thing? Obviously what we're interested in are dates, and hopefully in some cases a clue as to who made the darn thing. For the most part my interest is with drivers of the alnico and the more or less fullrange variety. Without much knowledge on these things I'm pretty much making a stab in the dark whenever I pick up some interesting looking unit from the local thrift store. Planet10, rescue me!
