That FF85WK is a unicorn and has a certain charm to it that other fostex drivers don't have.
It is by far my favorite.

The old CTS driver version is pretty good
I may be sitting on 4 of those from my 1974 microTower clone build. No top end.

It is one i would like to hear. If you are looking for good but pricey, the Alpair 5 MAOP: https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.c...agnetic-arc-oxidized-full-range-matched-pair/

Yes! In any case scenario it will be used as midrange! ~500 to ~3000@vassilis1984 - Where are you able to find the small NE series Peerless? The NE65 is a nice driver, but the alu cone is a little rough up top. The NE85 is a bit more of a midrange. I wouldn't run it FR because of the cone breakup.

I just ordered the vifa ne85w
My previous experience with the larger ne180w was very good so I expect similar performance for the size.!
Thanks a lot for replying!

I ordered a few ne65w from tlhp while still in stock
And they kinda fit into the wg148r opening...

Not sure why you'd any of these in a three way
They're basically ideal for a full range or maybe a two-way
I've tried six of them:
TC9, TG9, the Fostex FF85WK, the Vifa and SB Acoustics and the Faital:
1) for the money I don't think you'll beat the TC9. Nothing as good in it's price range IMHO
2) Though I have the TG9 I haven't heard them
3) The Vifa is "ok" but when used as a full range they're something missing at the top
4) Fostex looks like it should cost $10 but sounds fantastic. A little better than the TC9
5) SB Acoustics - if I had to pick one, that's probably it. Sounds about as good as the Fostex, but a better choice for car audio. (Much more weatherproof)
6) Faital will rip your ears off and I've never been able to understand why it's so popular. It's loud... that's about all I can say for it.
If you go digging over at diymobileaudio.com, there is an aluminum full range designed specificall for cars that used to sell for over $100, which MCM/Newark Electronics is doing on clearance for about $15 and it looks like it's competitive with the SB Acoustics, at least on paper
Plus, obviously, the Scanspeak 10F is beloved in this size range

@Patrick Bateman which sb acoustics are you referring to? Sb10 or sb65?
I know what are they designed for but at Timothy feleppas tests the very similar ne95w has good distortion plots in the midrange as the majority of those small full ranges, so using it for midrange makes sense to me.

SB65
Both drivers are good I just like the SB65 a little better
Both sound "clean" due to their low distortion, but the SB65 has about 2-3dB more output above 10khz and if you're running them full range it makes a difference
If you're not running them full range they'll likely sound about the same IMHO

Another one worth considering is the ND64 from Dayton. It will go in a tiny enclosure, and sounds good within its limits. For low distortion, I wouldn't cross lower than 400 Hz. It lacks a little air/detail in the top 1.5 octaves when directly compared to a higher quality transducer, but in my experience most full range drivers do, and it doesn't make that much difference in typical listening. Irrelevant if you are using a tweeter anyway.
I've tested a pile of small drivers as well (SB65, TG9FD, FF85WK, bunch of the cheap Tang Band, Peerless, and Dayton 1.5-3 inchers, etc.). My top 3 in no order are the TG9FD, FF85WK, and ND64. The SB65 is pretty good too, but it costs more than ND64 and requires a larger enclosure, so that pushed me toward the ND64.
