VHS HiFi was good, but it had it's issues (buzzing for example when the heads are slightly out of alignment or simply on certain tape types). It was certainly much much better than the linear audio on VHS. Check out this video, the HiFi audio kicks in after a couple of seconds and it sounds much better with less dropouts etc.

But yeah, it really is just a compromise for when you don't have a high enough linear speed/track width and can be beaten by even the most pedestrian cassette decks/reel to reel recorders.
When it works it's good, but when it doesn't it's horrible, and unfortunately it doesn't more often than not 🙁
