VGA vs. Composite/Svideo

Yeah i thought about the dedicated video card, but id rather not use my computer at all. It just seems easier to have this thingamadealy box with all my stuff hooked to it. Well actually i thought about having everything hooked to my vcr (ps2, tv, dvd) then running composite from my vcr to the external box then out via vga to the projector, but it has a cable hook up right on it so im gonna try that and see how good the quality is. It seems like it would be better than running it through my vcr. But anyway its expected to be here tomorrow, I CANT WAIT!!! I will let you know how it goes.

Yeah it sounds practically identical but with a few more features, I bet the fact that is a brandname will raise the price alot though. If mine turns out good I will let you know, it should be here in a few hours. I had a horrible day at work so hopefully this will make it all better.

I wish someone made a video card with component and S-video inputs.

I've found some with component out, but not component in.

Also, does anyone know If I were to plug my satellite reciver into an S-video video card input, would I need a TV tuner card to watch anything? I'm not even sure if video cards come with S-video in, without a tuner.

Also, with the TV WONDER VE: Do the TIVO- Like functions work with the S-Video input, or only the coaxal?

Hmmm well i got it.... The tv quality is definatly better, WAY less fuzzy, but I think the way they did this is jenktastic. It appears that the box just blurs the picture, I will admit for tv this helps a good amount, but for dvd it actually makes it worse. The fuzzyness is gone but the resolution actually appears lower and thats definatly not the results i was going for. I have result pics but i dont think they are acurate, its really only noticable in person. Oh yeah and some of the colors make jaggies on the edges of This wasnt to huge of a problem and went mostly away when i turned the color option of the box down.

ok here is the composite..

so pooh.. are you saying you are dissapointed with the results?.. is it worth the 80 bucks for this thing? Were you using composite from vcr to tvbox then using VGA cable to lcd panel? You cant really judge by the pictures because in my opinion the first pic actually looks better, lol. Im just looking to get a brighter, crisper image, more detailed image(isnt everyone..lol).. mainly brighter, even with all the lights off in my room at night there is significantly a dim picture, especially with movies. And I have a decent setup,.... i think

dukane 4003 ohp 4000lumen 410w fxl

qa-1150 lcd projection panel

BUT.... I am using 15ft of composite video cable to the panel so i figure im losing some signal. That is what I hoped this tv box tuner could help with, to bring the quality/maybe even a lil more light.. up to par with a computer vga output setup.

Ive only got $195 in my whole setup including all shipping so far.. so i cant complain too much. I just dont wanna spend 80 bucks on somethin that isnt gonna help much.

No, its not worth it. The picture was definatly not crisper. I had it hooked up through composite from vcr. I also tried hooking the cable directy through it but it didnt tune in hbo or showtime so thats a no go.. I will post more results later.. in a few mins...

Ok well im not gonna post more results because im lazy... but i have come to a conclusion. It does infact do a good job at making tv and vhs look better (through composite). I did a direct from composite to my projector and spliced the same line through the external box then to my vcr, and switched back and forth for a couple hours while watching tv. The downside is that some defenition is taken away, but it makes up for it by smoothing the crap out of it and taking practically all of the fuzzyness out. The disney channel in my area is complete fuzzy crap... but this box did help alot while lloyd in space was on.. SOOOO in conclusion (term paper style), If you want a cheap way to make your tv and vhs look a lil better get it, but i dont know if its really 70$ better. But to use it on dvds would be stupid. I think my next step will be making a cheap stand alone pc with a dvd rom drive dedicated to being a kinda htpc.

ok.. well while i DO want this external box...... i dont think that I got enough good vibes about it to actually drop down the $70. If i could find something cheaper that did basically the same thing then maybe, but I wish i could just to see how much it would help my setup.. but im not rich, if i were i'd just buy a real projector. sorry that you were the guinea pig poohbear.. but hey just think of it as a leap of information in the everchanging world of diy projection, and you are the pioneer......... ok maybe not all that but thanks for trying it anyways..hehe.

so are you planning on keeping it for tv viewing or just reselling it

Yes i am running composite to it then out via vga to the projector. I also tried running the cable cord to it then out through vga. It definatly doesnt double the lines, or i would have noticed better resolution. It just smooths the crap out of it, i especially noticed it with my ps2. Like i said it does help tv but not 70$s worth. Im not sure if im gonna keep it or resell it.

Hey Guys, I bought a Viewsonic Nextvision 5 off of Ebay and it puts out just as beautiful a picture as my PC. It has tv, composite, svideo, and RGB inputs and looks great on my lcd. So, if you guys find one on Ebay, you might consider that for a solution. I'm very happy with the one that I got.
