Very old NEC CD-Player and Chip Set

Hello Experts!

As I do not have much knowledge in the digital world, I am thinking about playing around with an old CD-Player I have.

The CD-Player is a NEC CD-607E. It hasn't a too bad build quality, and I think many today's drives are much more fragile. The output stage is shielded with sheet metal, and has lots  of capacitors. Must be a very high order analogue filter I guess....
The converter is a single BB PCM53 JP-V (I figure out it is the converter…PCM….).
There are also two Yamaha Chips, YM3531 and YM2201F, which, I guess, could have to do with data stream.

Unfortunately, despite searching the web, I couldn't find any datasheet or similar of the above mentioned chips. Also, I was not able to get a service manual for the NEC CD-Player.:bawling:

Following questions:
- Does anyone know these chips and could give me some more information about?
- Does anyone have more information abour this CD-Player? Perhaps the original player was another one, it was only badged NEC?
- Are there other possibilities to figure out the data stream from drive to the converter, even without any documentation?

Thank you very much for your help!

Cheers, Tino

I learned a lesson with my Yamaha CDP.
Yamaha never more.
No docs, no datasheets of the chips...
Yamaha doesn't even bother to repply to e-mails.

This is what I call customer service...
Avoid them as the plague.:bawling:

Oh, Matsushita (Panasonic) doesn't repply to e-mails too.:whazzat:
A simple mail asking where to find a datasheet of a component not available on their site...
They completely ignore the customer.

When possible, I always prefer to buy a European product.

Ohhh so for the YM.... Chips I will give up any hope.... :dead:

Ehm, someone knows the PCM53....?

Carlos, I assume you'r talking about electronic Yamaha stuff....not motorcycles 😀
Anyway, a Ducati looks way better😉

PCM53: 16 bit single channel with parallel inputs. So if there is only one they use it for both channels with a left/right switch after it. It needs three supplies (+5,+15,-15).

According to one list i have it is an current output dac, according to another list the output range is only specified in voltage (10V)
:xeye:

So you need drastic measures to get it to work with other dacs, therefore you need the datasheets of the yam chips :clown:

Yes, Ducs are much better. This time a year ago I was tear-assing through those beautiful Swiss Alps on my ST 4S....

If only they made CD players, they would have great clocking and minimal jitter (Ducati is known for it's handling), decent power supply (good torquey engines, sufficient power but not as much as Jap competitors), solid transport (good old Duc trellis frame), and look sexy as heck. Of course it would cost 50% more than a Japanese model and require regular servicing by a professional, but that's the price you pay.

A search on google with "pcm53 datasheet" gives results, but at least I can't download the file.:bawling:
Yes, unfortunately....:xeye:

I think I must give up any plans to play around with this player. :dead: :dead:

Hey Guido,

Do you know the Japanese prime-minister?
Does he have influence at Yamaha?:clown:
We need some "influence" to get Yamaha datasheets.😀

Bush?:dead:
😀

Oh, yes, and I would talk with them about their datasheets and manuals, drinking lots of Chianti and eating Parmigiano...😎

Nice that you enjoyed the swiss mountains on a Ducati! You brought it to Europe...how? Ship?

Found this block diagram of the YM3531, at least you now have the pinout.

Hope this helps

James

Got interested and googled. Two hits (no whack..)

Clicked and no problem viewing/downloading (?)

Anyway, page 16 shows oversampling technique using yam lsi.

ym2201 to pcm53 including the switching (2201 takes care of that). No pin numbers with the 2201, but with some re-engineering it must be possible to figure them out.

But it wont help much, one dac and swithing l/r is :hot:

Maybe you can start promoting the magnificant sound of this setup 😱 Then we'll all be modding our dacs again to go to mono and switching 😀 😀 😀 😀

Bought it from the factory in Bologna. Drove it for a few months while I lived in Italy. Shipped it back here.

James, and all others, thanks for the support! I am amazed how far one can get with the help of this forum.

Yes, Guido, this may be the mod of the year, mono and switching 😀 😀

From the block diagram, it seems that the YM3531 is the controller for the drive. Maybe the data it sends to the YM2201 has sort of a standard format 😕
Analyzing the data streams would be helpful, what do you think?Unfortunately I dont have a logic analyzer :bawling:

I will not touch the 3531, but the way to go is to get rid of 2201, PCM53 and output stage, from that what I learned now.

Cheers, Tino
