Very interesting Fred. Thanks for sharing. The 7 looks to be the same as the 7x, but with the glass phase plug. Very interesting! Pricing appears the same as well.
The Audioplan driver looks like the 5s or 5x, doesn't it? I've read great things about the 5s and 5x. I almost went that way, but figured the 7x was a bit better for OB.

Yeah, it's very much the same. Except for maybe the slightly extended HF (15kHz) and it's 2dB more efficient. The perspex phase plug looks cool all right.
One1speed,
Thanks for your further thoughts on Dx55 and 7x.
Not to beat da dead horse, but DX55 has small peak at 2k and mountain between 4kHz and 8kHz. If boost at 6db @300Hz (where dying) all the way down and to peak around 70Hz to 150Hz in BiB results in very "fun" sound. Not accurate, not flat, and not high brow audiophile approved, but bouncy super clear, super fast, prescent sound. Sometime I laugh when I listen. I recommend you try since you have both Dx55 and Bib. I treat whizzer with painted pattern; highs sound like coming from smooth tweeter not whizzer.
I don't think I like hot top end by itself, but rather balanced albeit "bumpy" response. Too smooth I lose interest.
Okay, perhpaps the 7x is not my cup o tea, but closer than 168XX. I think I should try 5x instead.

Seems like the 7x is very nice, but I can't help wonder how it compares to the Visaton B200. Has anyone had the chance to compare the two?
I've tried 2 coats linseed of oil (can be bought in art shops) on a cheap mid-bass unit. To my ears it seemed to have smoothed the upper end. It's an irreversible tweak so it's better try first on the whizzers of 'cheap' fr's.
About linseed oil......"raw" linseed oil dry very very slow or almost never
At least use "boiled" or "virgin" linseed oil

I found that glycerol is superior to oil (maybe because of lower viscosity).
I coated the whizzers in a XM Audiovox radio with clear nail polish and they smoothed out pretty well, but they were obnoxious before.

Good thought. I had wanted to compare the two drivers as well, but pretty much exhausted my resources picking up the 7x. I've heard great things about the B200 and seeriously considered that direction. Everyone was grabbing the B200, so I thought it would be interesting to try the Veravox.
Cheers.

Hi one1speed,
If you have the documents that came with the 7x drivers, if it's not a bother could you pls check what the rated efficiency is. I get conflicting efficiency specs from solen vs. olimpiaaudio on the Veravox 5x/s. Apart from that both websites publish the same T/S parameters. Thanks.🙂

http://www.solen.ca./ver.htm
Olimpia lists them as 93dB. 2dB lower than what Solen says.

I'll take a look. To be honest, I'm not positive I got anything with them. Could be worth a call to Solen, or whomever you would purchase from. I looked on a couple German sites, but nothing listed. Interesting.
I've wondered about that. Reason is, generally speaking, smaller drivers tend to be less efficient when comparing very similar drivers from the same company, like Fostex, for instance. That would also explain the way the LCYs seem a touch soft with the Veravoxs.
In any event, I'll try to check tonight. Note that I'm heading out of town tomorrow with much to do. I'll do it if I can. If not, feel free to bug me next week about it.

I took a look last night and didn't find anything. Perhaps ATD or some of the German folks could help out here. Curious as to what you find.
Best of luck, sorry I can't be of more help right now.

In particular he could read the comment here - in which Andreas specifically addresses sound quality of the 7 vs the B200:

Hi,
Thanks for the link and old thread guys. I've been to his website before some years ago. I'm glad they have wider distribution now. Will contact Cantare. Hmm, the 7x is now NOS. I think Beauhorn UK used ATD drivers as well in their B2 in place of the FE168S.
regards,
fred

Hi,
I like to explain you some aspects.
We have been the first company substancially pushing forward the Veravox drivers in Europe. The beginnig was the High End trade fair in Frankfurt May of 2002. The mini Onken called "little wing" was a dramatic succces, you could find a picture in every important magazine. At this time we started to distribute the drivers for OEM and DIY, a lot of designs were tested in the DIY magazines like Klang&Ton and Hobby HiFi. The "little wonder" verahorn and the "little wing" mini Onken for example. After that a lot of dealers accross the world copied our datasheets, pictures and recommended plans. That´s why you can find the pictures of us or the datasheets elsewhere. After a while I contacted these guys talking about my permission...
The old Veravox 7 you have was before my time. I have build up the Cantare Signature version because the top end of the old one was not extended enough for my taste. My version is flat from 100-18.000Hz at 94dB. Only smart and narrow peaks arround 7 and 9kHz. Not any notch filter is needed. On request we can build up that drivers.
Regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
The 7x (old version) is in my shortlist. Unfortunately, it would be more expensive for me to order the 'Sig' from EU. Thanks for posting background and info.

Hi,
if you ask me, I would say the Veravox is the better choice. I never heard the 7" but I know the 3" and 5S and heard the B 200 in all that original VISATON aplications.
The B 200 is great but the Veravoxes are better, regardless the prices. More airy, faster and natural.
Regards
Peter
