My hearing just fine. Its still exceptional and better than most 20 year olds according to the audiologist.By providing results i meant his hearing test results. I do not care about youtube.
With age we all, especially men, loose high frequency hearing.
It needs to be taken with grain of salt if some one at old age claims great hearing beyond 16kHz.
If you really want to know, I have a disorder that I make too much ear wax and the result of this, is my ears are not worn out.
That's interesting that you really into being adversarial. Is this some sort of hobby of yours: being contemptuous ?
I did provide results. 16kHz bandwidth for YouTube, and more for my ears, beyond 17kHz. Both measured with Tektronix instruments.Provide results!
In reality there is nothing much past 15K than high harmonic overtones. Do you think those old tape machines recorded that?
Depends on the machine , head , speed
and tape.
Most the losses be mixing down to vinyl
or smaller tape.
Depending on the instrument/ recording
some limits are the microphones.
There is same romance with producers
Holding on to older famous microphones
they wont step away from.
But luckily there is rather high res
microphones these days. A software synths
can climb up to 32 bit 64 bit. So sound
design and synths can go way way up there
in frequency. And the timbre / clarity of the sounds
stills sounds better on a system that can go above
your hearing. Well known with musicians with blasted
ears. It is a strange thing. Clarity , detail however
you describe higher harmonics in complex waveforms.
Even with hearing loss. Playback on a system with
higher frequency quality is still noticeable.
And if your familiar with sound design and work
with sound often. The initial attack and decay of
some instruments and distortion involved.
Are noticeable with different
tweeter types.
Far as getting a basic waveform and getting a scope
image. sure why not use youtube. Specially doing a repair.
Dont need ground breaking resolution. Just a waveform
to see what is going on.

What on earth are you talking about? What part of the16kHz result I already provided don’t you understand?Provide results!
I use these all the time.

A wide collection of high quality test tones, which are just "played", not generated on the spot so no software requirements, only built in player in any device.
Only trick needed is that they are 30 seconds long, so set player to "repeat one" for continuous tone.
Be realistic: headphone output is 100-200mV, typical 3.7V phone battery limits that.

Funny
So one more or less improbable one does not change the situation much 🙂
Find it hard to believe that too much ear wax improves hearing.
By the way: ears do not wear out by listening same as eyes do not wear out by looking.
Now: deterioration caused by age?
Any day of the week.
Hearing same as a 20 y.o.?
NO WAY
Funny but your hobby seems to be posting hard to believe statements about detecting capacitor brand by ear and similar amazing feats. My hearing just fine. Its still exceptional and better than most 20 year olds according to the audiologist.

How is that helpful for the majority of other people?
Since the vast majority of hearing from most people will decline after their 30s. (little earlier actually)
I read that often that someone claims to have some amazing gift.
Well, good for you......
It's not relevant for the discussion(s).
It most certainly isn't true that most people will have that gift as well.
Please, don't feed into trolls that make side remarks.Ok, assuming you're right.

Before I has signal generators, I had a clock radio I created output connections for signal injection. I'll still use it when I want to burn in something with a signal going through it because its less stress on some things like op amp/solid state circuits than a continuous sine wave. Why all the fuzz?
REW and the soundcard of your PC will let you do everything and more.
Been there: used a function generator on my phone for sine wave, a DAP in repeat mode to burn in caps...
But nothing beats a dedicated interface for serious measurements, for a modest CAPEX of < $200.

Its possible to generate quite a lot using Python, numpy, the scipy.signal package plus one of the WAV file packages and you're up and running with relatively few lines of code.
Not only easy but fun - for a certain mindset 🙂. Python libraries make you more productive - the three most heavily used by me are numpy, scipy.signal and matplotlib. They are heavily used by the scientific community so they are well maintained and solid workhorses. And surprizingly fast too as all the numeric stuff is tightly coded C++ under the hood. And of course there's a Python package for almost anything you can think of!
Python is a great example of how not to design a programming language. C++ has its mistakes too, but a good programmer can avoid the pitfalls.
