If those flaps don't fold back to open the safety shutters then the plug won't go in. That may explain the insertion difficulty.

For what it's worth... I just bought a used Quad 44 (and 405 amp, and FM4 tuner). It has a hiss and 60 Hz harmonics buzz, but that's not why I write today. With needlenose pliers/small screwdriver, I removed both folding 'ears' from each power sockets. Make sure all bits are fished out of the well. These flaps do not affect electrical connections. Of course I am not worried about resale value... After that, IEC male ends of cables I got from Amazon connected properly: the accompanying 405 and FM4 units were thus powered properly. And hum and buzz still present... Darn. If that helps...
