Defo what's your idea?
Never used that design. What makes you want (with prices in the hundreds $/€), maybe to have it on the high frequencies with a low xover point with the woofer/midwoofer, ala ATC-dome (w/Fs=400Hz), with the advantage of no need for a tweeter. 😛
Another similar model (1/4 price/but a midrange design) is the TangBand WF SERIES W4-1805S.

My idea is to find a small driver which can cover 500-20khz with decent sensitivity, and couple it to a large waveguide. Small fullranges usually have very low sensitivity and poor power handling. I dont know why Accuton have listed it as 800-12khz when their freq graph and distorsion data easily reaches 20khz though.

I was looking at it recently.. for it's extended bandwidth, but NOT for a waveguide.

It's a 2 inch driver and it's response above 4 khz has a bit of a loss in pressure, more so when you consider that it's right around this region that a 2 inch driver will start loosing pressure off-axis.

Because of this most waveguides will result in a *very* depressed response above 5 kHz. If you are looking for something with wide bandwidth and eff. then this is NOT the solution for you. 😉

Also at around 250 US, it isn't exactly cheap either.

I could see a large "shallow" waveguide on a SB Acoustics SB25STC.. (..though not for operation as low as 500 Hz.)

I suppose you are refering to off axis dispersion and beaming issues? How does it compare to other larger full range drivers in this department?

Isnt that common with waveguide loaded tweeters? A tilted down response because of the low end loading. With eq I dont see this as a problem, or is it more to it? 🙂

..it's all about sd (assuming no "phasing" device in front of the driver with an otherwise "tilted-up" response on-axis).

2 inch drivers spherical (convex or concave) will all have about the same loss in pressure off axis at about the same freq.. (..cantenary drivers can sometimes marginally improve on the upper freq. loss, and of course compound drivers like the recent "ring" type variety can act as small sd for higher freq.s and larger sd for lower freq.s.)

There is "more to it" (literally) with a 2 inch driver, and particularly with *this* 2 inch driver (because of it's response on axis at higher freq.s relative to the rest of it's lower freq. bandwidth).

The loss in pressure at higher freq.s you commonly see with 1 inch drivers will become exaggerated with 2 inch drivers. Less pressure off-axis provides less pressure for the waveguide to work with. More so with this particular driver because of its response at higher freq.s is a bit depressed in level relative to the response around 3 kHz. It wouldn't be an easy couture to eq., and you would effectively end-up with a *less* eff. driver. 😉
 
Hi,

This design uses an older Accuton/ Thiel 50 mm tweeter from 1100 to 20 kHz. I heard it some months ago. Very nice, If you like the detailed the ceramic sound.
