Using software based music production tools to listen to music

My music system currently runs on Windows, X86 hardware. It was cheap. I'm using LMS and Squeezeplay.

I needed to shelf down the rising response of a pair of speakers I recently purchased, so I've incorporated Equalizer APO into Windows. It works great and I'm sure sounds a lot better that a hardware EQ of the same capability. That was easy - no soldering required!

This Equalizer APO can run VST plug ins, so I thought I'd try a couple and... two worked, one crashes the host. In the signal processing vein of course; I'm not trying to play a synthesizer along with the music.

What are some useful plug-ins that folks doing the same - using music production tools to listen to music - are using? I'm thinking stuff like;

- Sound stage enhancers
- Dynamic range enhancers
- Room simulators
- Frequency analysis displays

Might as well put that I5 silicon performance to some good use, while it's conveying bits from somewhere over to the sound card DAC. How about other music production plug-in hosts that can get in-between whatever Windows player your using and the audio output? What's the rung up from Equalizer APO, for PC based home listening, Stereo and the various X.1 formats?

I'm newb at this, having only just discovered Equalizer APO. I had no idea these things existed and could be used for home audio listening. I'll never look back, given the capability I'm hoping is available actually works. As nice as the 31 band EQ does. Thanks!
