Are there any readily-available portable cd players with SPDIF outputs that have the potential (after mods) to become good transports for a DAC?
There have been some... Radio Shack sold the Optimus CD-3400 which had S/PDIF out, and developed a cult following once audiophiles noticed that. I'm sure there were higher-end models from various Japanese makes that included digital out. (maybe Kenwood?)
Whether there are any current models with S/PDIF out, I have no idea, but I'm guessing the market for higher-end CD players ain't what it was in the '90s. Buying used is a gamble; they definitely don't last forever if they've been used heavily, but a low-mileage or NOS unit could be fine.
I have seen a number of portable DVD players that included digital outputs for Dolby Digital surround; those should also put out S/PDIF for CD audio.
