Using Asus Xonar H6 for mains

Hello,

I have an Asus Xonar Essence ST and H6 daughter board. I am using it with Jriver to crossover a pair of bi-amped speakers

Dayton D250P coupled to SEOS12
Dayton PA310-8

Since they are bi-amped it seems I can't use the main ST card but instead the H6 card. I've noticed some differences from reading a couple sites. I'm wondering if you guys can let me know what kind of change is going on. I really enjoy the ST card plugged in to any speakers I've used.

Basically put, am I stepping down in 'sound quality' and to what extent.

Thanks.
Shawn

The hardware on both of those is pretty decent. The ST front output will continue to use the same hardware and there will be no change. The 1796 on the H6 boards is not exactly a slouch either, so you should be good to go. The increase in sound quality from active crossover (if done properly) will basically be significantly more, well, significant, than any loss in D/A conversion.

How is the crossover handled? Can you not route one of the output pairs to the Front outputs?

Hi

55/48000 is about 1ms delay. That's worst case.

The latency of the Xonar drivers in Windows running in shared mode is around 25ms. I think it will not be an issue.

You could write to Asus to find out, but I very much suspect they won't be able to answer the question. Or you could simply incorporate the delay into the tweeter network to help time align the drivers 🙂
