Using an older Laptop as a projection panel?

I wanted to ask this question for long time, but kept telling myself it's probably a bad idea. But, here it goes:

why don't use an older pII laptop computer as a projection panel? it could be purchased from ebay in $200~400 range, it gives you a 13-14" XGA screen (perfect size for 11.25" stages), and a working computer.

personally, I wont buy one off ebay. but one day when I am tired of my P II 333 IBM, I am going to take it apart.

what do you think?

Well this certainly isn't a new idea, but it's not a bad one. The problem is getting any inputs on the thing. Older laptops will not have Firewire or USB 2.0. Even if you did have a laptop with one of those, you could only get something that had S-video input at best w/o spending thousands.

mine has a DVD-rom. for other video feed, how about a network PCcard ($5-50) + widnows media encoder (free from MS) 😉 ?

Well, for me, I already have a dual PIII 1.1G + TV card with video input . so I don't need to add cost. for others, unless you have necessary stuffs laying aroung, it will cost more than lcd controller + a lcd panel. only benefit is that you know your lcd screen will work with your laptop 🙂

the lcd will work that way like the ones there using for d.i.y
i work on ibm laptops at work.i took one apart just remove the
thick plexiglass on the back try to leave the steel cage holding it together it flimsy. hmm maybe some day ill make one out of my old 20 inch ibm lcd. light are starting to go anyway😉 :drink:
