For the preamp I'm building I've bought an Alps blue pot for the volume control and a Greyhill 71 series rotary switch for the input selector. the Alps is a 6mm flatted shaft and the Greyhill is a 4mm round shaft (It was supposed to be flatted according to Mouser).
I'd like to use the same knob on both controls.
Is there something I can make or buy to step the Greyhills shaft up to 6mm so I can use matching knobs?
I can't find much Googling.

Use a metal or plastic tube that fits the 1mm space between. Drill a hole in it for set screw clearance.
You might be able to find a ready made spacer that works.
Judicious use of aluminum foil? Cut a strip from a bicycle inner tube and glue a strip on to the 4mm shaft?
Funny i had this issue last week with a Greyhill 71 switch, i did exactly what rayma described with a piece of alloy tube. It was pure chance i had a 6mm tube with a 4mm ID, surprised myself on that one.
Heat shrink tubing? Keep putting on heat shrink till it fits. The set screw should cut through it.

How many cubic feet of stuff did you have to dig through to find it?
I've done that before, too.
Thanks
I might see if I can find a couple of small Hellerman sleeves kicking around.

Something like this, perhaps: 5pcs 4mm x 6mm Flex Coupler 0 157" to 0 236" Shaft Coupling | eBay

Scott

I've seen a few of those on ebay. would certainly be useful if building an amp with the switches at the back and extension rods to the front. But in this case as its a really compact build I'm mounting the pots and selector in to the front panel.

Understood -- you'd need a very short 6mm rod connecting the knob to the shaft coupler. Even so, the total length of all the constituent parts might be a bit much.
Good luck!

Nice find. Shame I just had a Mouser order through.
I'll save it for my next order and bodge something in the mean time.

I hate that, there is always that one item you are short after a Mouser order, and so beings the cycle again of building up your cart to qualify for free shipping 🙂
I'd take a trip to your local hardware emporium. 6mm tube can't be that difficult to find with 1mm wall thickness.
Agree.
And within reason, material is not that critical, because you are basically using it as a filler.
Maybe aluminum/brass/plastic .
