Use of PVC panels in loudspealer cabinets

Hello. I would like to ask if anyone has considered building speaker cabinets or Open Baffles using PVC panels. I went to Home Depot and checked them out. I made a rap test on both 3/4" wood and PVC and the PVC not only sounded more dead than the wood but also seemed to be denser than the wood panel of the same thickness. opinions?

It would not work unless the PVC was 3/4" thick and then i still don't think it would be as dense as MDF one 3"/4"thick 4'x8' sheet of MDF weighs 96 pounds thats 3 pounds per square foot thats pretty dense and great for building speaker cabinets.

PVC may release toxic gases if burned - many Chlorine combustion products aren't nice

Urethane "Modeling Board" is made in several densities

I am sure that they carry Renshape 5045, but the 3/4" thickness has always been a custom order for me, so I am not surprised that you can't find it. I am sure that a spec for Renshape 5043 is available on the web. It is a very common material, just not in lessor thicknesses.

Like asbestos, it is toxic too... I just found out many articles on the internet.. I believe PVC use now is out of the question...maybe glueing two .75" mdf panels together and lining the back with 110mm of some sort of Dynamat or any other type of acustical dampening material.........

PVC is still one of the most widely used thermoplastic resins.

Sand is toxic (silicosis), cotton is toxic (byssonosis)...

when the vinyl chlorides polymerize they become very long chain molecules - water, fat insoluble, and relatively inert to biological processes
many plastic's monomers/precursors are very unhealthy while the fully polymerized products can be food contact or even implant safe

small amounts of burning can happen when cutting with wrong feed/speed edge shape power tools

If PVC was toxic it would leech toxins out into our water and just about all newer homes i have worked in use PVC for water supply lines. As far as MDF being toxic i don't know but i bet there is more harmful chemicals in our food than MDF. The MDF is just saw dust and glue.

"vinyl chloride is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC)"
Sonce is not tossix, EPA has classified vinyl chloride as a Group A, human carcinogen. !!
Again: vinyl chloride is carcinogen, PVC is not!

Agreed!
