I have recently bought a 128MB USB2 Flash Drive, to transfer files between my PCs. I wondered if it would be possible to store MP3 files, or any other type of music file, and have a microprocessor read the files, and use a DAC/converter to change the output to analogue. This is mainly food for thougt, as i have too many projects currently to start this one.
I just wanted to know if anyone else had found any information about this sort of project, or had thought of/started something similar.

I just read about a Data & Music drive by MAGNEX.
It can store any kind of digital informations , mp3 included.
It is exactly like a USB flash drive but it features a mp3 player .
It is avaiable for 64 128 and 256 Mb. There is a phone jack connector, 2 buttons for volume control, a menu button and the hold key.
🙂

Hi
It hardly seems to be worth the effort as one can already buy USB flash keys with built in MP3 players and they are not much more expensive than the flash key itself:
I picked these part numbers off a local (South African) site. They dont appear to match the Transcend part numbers.
JF-128MP3 Transcend® JetFlashA™ Audio USB 2.0 Flash Drive 128MB - MP3 player, USB-FDD/USB-ZIP/USB-HDD bootup
JF-256MP3 Transcend® JetFlashA™ Audio USB 2.0 Flash Drive 256MB - MP3 player, USB-FDD/USB-ZIP/USB-HDD bootup
Cheers,
Stuart

yea, with an iPod you can be listening to full rez AIFF files instead of decimated MP3 files (ie junk) ...
An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

it was just an idea. i want to get a ~30GB MP3 player, like this one: http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/hardware/mp3mp4wavwmaatracplayers/productView.htm?quicklinx=2SZD
the ipod is more expensive, at least from www.dabs.com (the online shop i get al my PC stuff from)

But is it really when you factor in quality, reliability, and ease of use? Will the other MP3 player play AIFFs? Can you use it as a portable FW HD? Does it sync with your address book & database?

AIFFs? is that a different format? i havent actually checked the features, as i havent got the cash at the moment.

The extract of CD at full resolution unlike an MP3 which is a mutilated version.
ie WAY BETTER sound.

Is there any advantage to saving in AIFF over WAV?
Yes the iPod is quickly evolving towards being a multipurpose handheld (ie Newton 3000).
I'm not all that up on sound formats but AFAIK AIFF & WAV are both non-lossy formats.
dave
WAV files are the exact same quality as a cd you can’t get any better than WAV out of a music cd
