Not DIY but hopefully someone can help. Wife has just upgraded her phone which now doesn't have a headphone socket but she does have a half decent pair of headphones she likes to use to listen to music on either plugged into laptop. USB-C headphone adaptors seem to start at $4 but at what point are they worth getting for a casual user who just wants it to last beyond the warranty period?
There was the USB headphone adapter Apple used to sell for $10, which only worked at 16/48 (so the phone might have to resample some content). However, the device measured impressively good distortion performance...into a high-z load. Degraded a fair bit if driving headphones.

The adapter in the link above looks like the one I bought from Best But about 10 days ago. It works however with my cheap I.E.M.'s (forgot the brand) the output is very low (Using Samsung S8 Ultra Tab).
What kind of headphones will she be using? At a price of €9 for the Apple dongle, you cannot go wrong when matching it up with IEMs of decent sensitivity. It's 24/48 and it drives my Truthear Zero Red IEMs quite nicely.
Can confirm its really good for that price, very happy with it.vAnd looks like android is playing audio 48khz or multiplication, so that's fine. There was the USB headphone adapter Apple used to sell for $10, which only worked at 16/48 (so the phone might have to resample some content). It's worth noting that there is a US version (A2049) with 1V output, and an EU version (A2155) with 0.5V output.
