You may be correct. The presence of the objects certainly had become a domestic political issue after the constant press coverage of that Chinese balloon freely traversing the skies of United States. I can imagine that Pres. Biden gave orders to immediately bring down any other such objects out of concern that they would be similarly utilized as a domestic political issue. However, even then, the Pentagon shouldn't be embarrassed for merely following the President's orders.

Coincidentally, that concern had supposedly been expressed by none other than, Dr. Werner von Braun, the former Nazi scientist who had been in charge of Hitler's V2 rocket program, and so, put in charge of the United States' emergent rocket program after the war. Which culminated in the Apollo moon landings. One of von Braun's American assistant rocket scientists (I've watched her interviewed on this but, unfortunately, I don't recall her name) said that he once confided to her, after years of working together, to beware of elements within the U.S. government one day falsely claiming that the nation was under threat of attack by extra-terrestrials, in order to justify massive increases in defense spending.

Looks like I erroneously recollected that, Von Braun had thought a potential Alien attack would be merely a rouse by the U.S. military. However, this clarification causes me to wonder what he knew that would bring him to verbally express such a bizarre concern. Especially, for a man in his esteemed position.
I read it (last line of the transcript) that von Braun said it would be a lie that we're going to have to build space based weapons against a potential alien threat.

I read an article in Foreign Affairs that talked about China's space weapons, and how it was imperative that the US and Russia (you know this was a while ago) needed to continue to work together to produce space weapons to counterbalance the Chinese.

While in school getting my EE degree, the microwave lab instructor was an ex Airforce Captain ...I got straight "A"s in Microwaves (First straight "A's ever) ...while working on TE-10 waveguides, we got to talking about the Reagan so-called Star Wars weapons program that was gearing up. We were trying talking, wondering to picture just what it might look like as an observer near "ground zero" targets...when the instructor glanced left & right as he whispered what it "does look like"...???? There's no doubt in my mind such weapons already exist, and have for some time.
Mind you, this is the same school that the CIA came-a-calling, trying to recruit me...coincidence?, perhaps...I do have some operational theories of a high powered microwave weapon...but would only operate in the atmosphere as designed....yeah, the dinner-plate sized hole burning thru a wall, building, car , etc. Yipee!
