Upgrade my LP12 or move on?

The audiomods is a great arm and worthy of stellar company. I know nothing about your subchassis but I do know a Geddon clone, while capable of swing, isnt the last word in speed stability.

I'd look a new drive system and the best cart you can afford.

There's an Arduino tacho control that will work on your linn in the group buy section, think a cheap Radikal and you're there.

That's good advice thanks. I have been looking through the threads on motor drives; some really good info on here.

As for the subchassis the first one is not pretty but is functional.

It goes without saying, but the LP12 needs to be setup properly and is far more finicky to get it all right (incl. suspension, tension of top plate etc.). Perhaps you can get some advice from the Linn forum or one of the dealers?

As far as I know Linn uses a special jig to build their turntables and set them up. Linn_LP-12

Is the subchassis not much heavier than the original?

Mounting the tonearm directly sounds like a great idea, only i have come to the conclusion that a softer decoupling tonearm board is essential to the Linn sound and generally helpful in other tts too. Rigidity isn't always everything.

I'll throw my pennies worth in. I owned an LP12 for 30 years with a myriad of upgrades and an Ittok/Troika. I sold this when I bought a Rega RP8 (that's another story of woe).

Anyway this led me to buying a Technics SP10, EPA100 and EPC205. This rig is SOOO much better than any LP12 I have heard. The SP10 is so good I'll never own another TT.

Oh and the SP10 setup cost less than I sold my LP12 for.

I had two , one with Ittok and the other with Grace 707. Both were better than Rega P9 flagship I also owned at that time. I had too much money tied up to Rega so I sold LP12's to my regret . I didn't find LInn half as fussy to operate as some make it to be. It offered bold, musical presentation , light years ahead of Thorens TD124 which I also had a misfortune to own at that time. All gone now but I miss LP12 the most. It is very personal hobby and one mans trash can be the other's treasure . My friend who bought that unfortunate P9 from me absolutely adores that table and says it's his best audio purchase . It's hard to believe (but maybe not ) that there are people ready to spend almost $30k on fully decked out LP12.

hello. Im thinking of building a Geddon power supply for my LP12. In the garage I have a old 1000v/a 240v to 110v step down transformer. Its definatley not an auto transformer, it is a old style transformer rather than a torroid. Can i use this ARLEC 240v to 110v step down transformer for a geddon or does it have to be a torroid? thanks

Hi, personally (yes I have been there) the Linn is just a money pit that people never seem to get the promised sound.
The Audiomod's should work well with most MC cartridges, but remember to match the Eff Mass of the arm to the Cartridge compliance. Linn originally choose very 'how shall we say'' Rosy sounding carts to go with the T/T's, most originally sourced from Suprex. That was to overcome the clinical almost CD sound of the deck.
The best upgrade for a Linn that actually makes it sound reasonable is to use the O/Live DC motor & control box, but that will cost around a $1000. Unless you can find one S/H, which I did.

However for far less I would (well I did) sell of the Linn & bought a Lenco L78, the 75 is also OK. After quickly dumping the rubbish arm & all the jangly bits under the table. I refurbished the bearing & motor. (kit's are available, see Lenco heaven). built a decent plinth & put a Temaad 12'' arm on it. At last I had a musical T/T, all for less than the price of the O/L motor controller.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice. This post is from 2020. I was tempted with a Lenco but did go down the upgrade path and now have the LP12 sounding good with a DC motor and other modifications. I posted details here: Link
