Upgrade headphones out pot on my monitor controller
Hi all,
I recently bought a Dangerous Music Monitor ST. It's a really nice MC, it has lots of nice features, and the main level pot for the speakers outs is absolutely fantastic.
The only thing I don't like, and that's why I'm here, are the pots on the main unit. I don't like the feel of them, but mostly I don't like their tracking, not at all smooth, expecially the one for the headphones out volume, which I need to use often; in 2 positions, the volume difference between the left and the right is really big. So I'm thinking to upgrade at least this pot with a better one.
They use this pot for the HP volume.
So please, suggest pots that you think are better than this one, and that will fit in place of it. I've been already told about the Alps Blue Velvet, but I could not find it in the alps site.
I was also thinking of a stepped pot...what do you think? Will that fit?
Oh, and please, be aware that I'm not an expert on electronics, I might not understand everything you say....😀
Thanks

Hi Virelai,
well, first one question is: Is the unit still on warranty? (you know where I'm headed, eh...) If so, modifying it in any way, even taking the lid off will void the warranty.
Unless you don't care about the warranty...
But technically, yes it is possible to change the potentiometer. But in order to tell you with what model, well, it's impossible without knowing what type the other one is... We would need to see it, meaning take it apart, take pictures, give us a model number, and last but not least, are you handy with a soldering iron? Have you done this kind of thing before?
It's something that needs a bit of thinking still... give us some inside pics if you can, then we'll see.
cheers

First of all thanks for replying! 🙂
Yes it is.
I have to say I'm a bit pissed off with them cause when I send it back, they were saying to me that the pot performs very well....so, I don't care much if this voids the warranty, This piece of gear is not exactly cheap, and I think they could use pots that track a little better, but that's just my opinion.

Ok, I will take pictures of it, but I don't think I will take it apart right now, cause I'm using it. I gave a link on my previous post to the specs brochure of the pot though, maybe you didn't noticed, it's here anyway. The brochure is for 2 models, identical for what I could see, except for the position of the pins...but I might be wrong.
Yes I'm a bit handy with soldering iron, I've done a lot of different cables, I've soldered caps and resistances on PCB's, but I've never soldered pots, and, I must say, I recently had a bad experience on desoldering an IC from an MP3 player!

Thanks again for helping me!
