Hi trying to replace this woofer (vintage pioneer woofer pw382a-1) can not find any info on the parameters. I am sure the driver needs a larger box volume then the big box it was in. CS-63 from 1970 this was not the DX model. Box internals 26 7/8" X 16" X 8.5". Any help?
I had to read that a few times before I grasped what you were talking about.
But I think I get it. A broken Pioneer CS-63 "Kabuki" speaker which I took the trouble to look up. 12-15" bass, which can't be all that loud in reality.
Doubtless the crossover is woeful, but this sort of thing only had to excel at producing loud plunky Kabuki Music sounds. 😀
Troels Gravesen had a go at renovating something not a million miles away: SEAS Kit 503
It turned out well!
I think its going to be hard to find a replacement bass here, TBH. Eminence Speaker | Loudspeakers for Professional Audio and Guitar and Bass | The most trusted name in loudspeakers since 1966. Great upgrades for JBL, Celestion, Jensen, and Fane. make big drivers that can work in closed box or reflex, but they might be a bit loud.

Thanks Steve I have always liked your post. I was trying to find the T/S numbers for these. Normally would not care but I have read good things about these speakers lately, they were the top model from Pioneer in 1970. The normal complaint about the Japanese speakers of that time. Not enough bass for that big a box, but these boxes are built like a tank. Yet the woofer is set into the box by over 50mm. A lot more bass could be made if just moved to the front. I was hoping to find more info before I get out the skill-saw.
Does anybody really care about Thiele-Small parameters any more?
It's all in the simulator, working behind the scenes. 🙂
Couple of cubic feet is not all that large for a 15" bass, but it's what you have got. Closed box would take the bass down subjectively too.
Best put them next to a wall, IMO. Or use bass tone control.
Replacement driver would be around 90dB efficiency I suppose. Small magnet for closed box and to lower the loudness. Qts around 0.5 for closed box. Lowest Vas you can find, otherwise you get lumpy bass. Lowest Fs too. Oh wait, that IS Thiele-Small... LOL
I bet Parts Express have some cheapie 15" driver that fits the bill. You'll find some review that says such and such driver worked well in old Pioneer/Sansui/Technics speakers. As for front mounting it, that possibly depends on the chassis construction.

Believe it or not, but these old Pioneer speakers really have a high sensitivity (>95 dB) and a replacement woofer of 90 dB isn't appropriate at all.
That's useful info. I erred on the lower side, because if you get it wrong, you've got somewhere to go. 😀
11 winsome cheapie 15" woofers here: Woofers in the Speaker Components Department at Parts Express | 15
Now we can chuck out polycones and 4 ohms, I guess.

Good work, phivates. I've never regretted buying an eminence woofer.
