My friend used to own a car audio store, and he has some sort of accoustics/speaker measurement device that his techs used to use to set up speakers optimally in cars. I don't know exactly what it does, and I have no idea what it's called, but I thought it might be of some use to me in my new loudspeaker building hobby. I haven't actually seen it, and he doesn't remember much about it except that it's a relatively small rectangular plastic box with (he thinks) 4 microphones wired to it. He doesn't remember the microphones having any sort of connectors or plugs though, just wired dirrectly into the case. Aside from that, it has an alphanumeric LCD display around 2x3" and possibly backlit. Below that, it had a knob/dial, and several different function buttons. I don't really have any more details than that other than it cost about $3000 new, so apparently it's more than just an SPL meter.
I'm hoping somebody will recognize this or at least be able to tell me what something like this is called so I can look it up and actually see what it does without waiting for my friend to dig it out of storage. It should at least be useful for measuring on/off axis response and maybe a nice measurement mic for speakerworkshop if it has a preamped output, which he thinks it does. Maybe this belongs in the car audio forum, but it has less traffic, and searching there revealed no mention of any real testing equipment, and since I want to use this for home loudspeakers, I posted it here. I hope somebody can help me out.
